Introduction

Social media is a continually growing source of problems and issues from bullying to celebrity drama to affecting college and job opportunities. Teenagers and young adults constantly find themselves going through emotions of hurt, anger or depression as a result of the blind actions taken by others. On the internet, there is a false sense of security when one has their privacy setting turned on and they can control who sees what; this feeling is extremely evident on social media apps such as Instagram where account holders create several accounts to post different things. A girl I met recently, whose name has been changed to Olivia as to protect her privacy, is one of my many friends on Instagram that created a Finsta and posts daily. The content of her posts includes wild drunkenness, the daily picture of a bong or a blunt as she brags about learning to roll and pearl or gloating about how being high feels so great. If she considered her actions she would realize the points of question in her character because of all of the illegal things she is part of. I know that it is very common for teenagers today to partake in these activities at parties, or hangouts, however what they do not consider is the consequence of a higher authority discovering the content. My friend Olivia is a current student and being this age generally evokes the feeling of invincibility in older teens and young adults. Although Olivia’s Finsta account is under a completely fabricated username and the account is private, someone who follows her and who may have developed negative feelings towards her can always take the incriminating evidence to her assigned school dean, and it could result in severe repercussions for her. It was just recently that she and I were going on break at the same time and she approached me and asked me to smoke with her in her car. I politely declined and gave the reasoning that for one, we were at work and for two I do not smoke. The cost outweighed the benefit in this situation and I did not want my personal state altered at work or have the potential of getting caught by my bosses, having my experience posted on social media or my parents finding out was not my forte.
