Michael Ray Charles is an American artist and a prominent influence in the African and African Diaspora studies at The University of Texas. He is well known for his art that combats stereotypes in the African-American community. The bluntness of the imagery he uses in his art engages the audience by forcing them to reflect and challenge the stereotypes they may conform to or accept as the truth. At the Michael Ray Charles Exhibit in the Gordon-White Building, a collection of prints, sculptures, chalk-sketches and paintings voice Charles’ protest against the ideology placed on the Black community over a century ago. Observing this artistic rebellion in one of the many ways the audience can understand the concept of stereotypes, particularly in the African-American community and the consequences those labels carry.

Thesis: The problem in society today is in the industry of social media. The isolation caused by racism is based on a vague and outdated stigma. Those faced with racism aren’t even given a chance to prove that these race-based stereotypes are wrong. Being a fast food worker for the past year and a half, I have been exposed to numerous different types of people, and most of them are not the same race as me. When I first started to get to know them, even though at times there was difficulty communicating, we were able to make it work and build stronger relationships. One of my favorite managers was Rose, a Hispanic woman who had been so kind to me. She was an example of someone who was able to teach me things about herself I could have stereotyped and not taken the time to learn anything about her as an individual. Growing up in Joliet, Illinois has always given me the opportunity to experience race relations on a regular basis, just due to the diversity of the city that I live in.

As, we all know African Americans have been a target of prejudices as well as being discriminated against since they were stolen from Africa, this is a historical fact as well as, several movies such as Roots. As my own personal opinion, Donald Trumps is also recreating this act of cruelty with the Hispanic community.
In recent years, the media has reported on many instances of racial discrimination and hate crimes, from the Eric Garner case of police brutality to the nationwide outcry in Ferguson, Missouri. In today’s society, it is less socially desirable to exhibit overtly racist attitudes or behaviors, so people instead conceal these prejudices and attitudes by avoiding African-Americans as a whole, thereby participating in modern day racism. With such a racially charged culture, where political correctness and socially acceptable behavior is a daily expectation, do unconscious implicit racial preferences determine explicit personal attitudes and experiences towards Africa-Americans? Kent et al. (2011), from the Population Reference Bureau, concluded that nearly 50% of Americans under the age of 18 are minorities.
Because media is full of racist propaganda, racism is a relevant problem in today’s society. Media does not represent race in a proper way; it is based on opinions, it negatively influences our society in regards to the outlook on race, and it groups races into unfair categories. Until the media discontinues the inaccurate portrayal of race, society will continue to have an uninformed view of race that ultimately leads to racism. ‘What we know- what we have seen- is that America can change…what we have already achieved, gives us hope.. for what we can and must achieve tomorrow” (Obama). It is true that society has come a long way in regards to racism, but it has not yet come far enough.
The study of racism has a profound potential to become an ambiguous sociological endeavor. Incidentally, accounting for the multitude of factors which encompass this subject appear to make it the very heart of the matter and consequently the most time consuming. Although, it is my belief that all three of the main sociological theories (Functionalism, Conflict Theory and Symbolic Interactionism) should be integrated in order to achieve a legitimate and quantifiable outcome, for obvious reasons the “Conflict Theory” logically renders the best possible method to obtain a valid micro analysis of specific agents in this case. The oxford dictionary defines racism as being: prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior; a belief that all members of each race possesses characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.

People get categorized by stereotypes everyday just by outward appearances or the group of people they are associated with. A stereotype is a preconceived notion about a group of people. People form fixed images of a group that are assumed that all group members act and behave is a particular way. A person essentially gets stereotyped by being “guilty by association” of a particular group. All stereotypes get based off of a bit of truths that all group members similarly have.
Life is a symphony composed of three distinct movements, a lot of people, a few people, and almost no one; each of them is affected by stereotypes. "Stereotypes may be defined as popular beliefs about specific social groups or types of individuals and are broadly standardized or simplified conceptions of groups based on some prior assumptions,"*Stereotypes are present an incomplete, subjective and sometimes false image of the reality. They are often based on traditions and are resistant to change. Although they can have positive and negative effects, ; the last is much more common and easily spread throughout social institutions, such as mass media, that which is using stereotypes, based on the assumption , that they are well known to everyone and help the receivers to understand the content of the message.
