Negative Effects Of Csg On Australian Economy

560 Words3 Pages

• One economic advantage of mining coal seam gas (CSG) is the wealth that it will bring to the Australian economy (Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, 2015, p. 31).
• One economic disadvantage of mining CSG is the negative effects it will have on other industries, such as agriculture (Marinoni & Navarro Garcia, 2016).
• One equity advantage of mining CSG is that, because CSG deposits are often located in areas that are culturally significant, under native title indigenous communities have the potential to benefit (Norman, 2016).
• One equity disadvantage of mining CSG, in relation to the aforementioned point, is that other individuals, such as farmers, may be adversely affected(explain how?) with little to no say regarding operations …show more content…

On one hand mining operations have the potential to contribute a vast array of sustainability advantages. For example, from an economic and equity perspective CSG operations in Queensland (from six trains) are estimated to contribute $2.4 billion/year to the Federal government via company and personal income taxes (Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, 2015, p. 31), whilst at the same time providing employment and compensation to disadvantaged indigenous communities in the region, such as the Gomeroi mob (Norman, 2016). There are also environmental benefits in using extracted CSG in baseload electrical generation, with CO2 emissions via the combustion of natural gas being approximately 50% to that of coal (Bureau of Resource and Energy Economics, 2012, p. 27-28 & 34-35). Notwithstanding the benefits however, there are sustainability disadvantages. For example, from an economic perspective CSG operations are estimated to decrease revenue accruing to farmers by as much as $15,880 over 20 years per standard (<5ha) well installed (Marinoni & Navarro Garcia, 2016). Moreover, as Norman (2016) notes, there are also potential equity issues, with farmers feeling that they have little to no say regarding how land around their holdings are utilised because (they feel) traditional owners effectively hold all the cards insofar as land rights. Finally, an environmental sustainability disadvantage of CSG mining is that …show more content…
