This is thought to be because abuse and neglect can have a profound impact on a child's development, affecting their mental and emotional well-being and potentially leading to a variety of problems later in life, including involvement in criminal
Nor is there any single description that captures all families in which children are victims of abuse and neglect” (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families Administration on Children, Youth and Families Children 's Bureau, 2003). Research has recognized that there are numerous risk factors or characteristics parents or caregivers may show or have experienced that could increase the likelihood of child maltreatment, e.g., financial instability, participation in social service programs, family factors such as: age, personality, substance abuse, history of maltreatment stress, domestic violence; environmental factors and disabilities (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families Administration on Children, Youth and Families Children 's Bureau, 2003 & 2015). Because of the data, these commonalities are able to be precursors leading up to child abuse or maltreatment but many times it is hard to measure the severity of them and therefore they may end up undetected (U.S DHHSA
Policy Recommendations Given the pros and cons of each recommended alternative, I recommend that we require all teachers and staff to be trained in trauma-informed care. I believe that this strategy helps on decreasing the number of students who are being funneled into the criminal justice system because teachers and staff would have a better understanding of the impact of trauma in students. I also believe that the long-term effects of trauma can be exacerbated by ill-informed practices of teachers. In order to understand a child's behavior, it is important to understand the trauma that a child may have faced beforehand or is still facing.

One in four foster children report physical or psychological abuse by a foster parent every year. Children with disabilities or a past of abuse are at higher risk for maltreatment in their out-of-home-care (Font, 2015). The young child is at the greatest risk for disturbances in the developing brain if their environment lacks stimulating activities that are needed for physical, emotional, and behavioral growth.
The journal Child Abuse and Neglect included an article by Carmit Katz in 2014 titled, The dead end of domestic violence: Spotlight on children’s narratives during forensic investigations following domestic homicide. The article’s focus was to expose how children who witnessed their father murder their mother narrate this experience. The approach used in this study was thematic analysis of seven interviews, which is finding patterns within the data. The study employed inductive and semantic data analysis meaning there is no preexisting model or frame for the data and that the researchers views the data at face value and does not attempt to look beyond the actual words used. The results were not what I expected, the children did not fully
Children need to feel secure and loved and need supervision and guidance. If a parent cannot be present to care for and look after their children, it can cause the child to feel afraid and they may act out or behave in ways that they would not if the parent were living with them. Several studies have found that a significant number of children of incarcerated parents struggle with a variety of childhood problems that have long term implications for adult adjustment (Kjellstrand, 2012). Even if children visit parents in while they are incarcerated, the physical and emotional distance can become a strain on their relationship. I think more should be done to encourage courts to take families into consideration in sentencing and correctional facilities should have better resources for incarcerated parents to maintain healthy relationships with their children.
When an incident such as abuse occurs, child welfare systems are given a huge opportunity to step in and give these children their basic needs back. “The child welfare system is a group of services designed to promote the well-being of children by ensuring safety, achieving permanency, and strengthening families to successfully care for their children.” (National Center for Homeless Education, 2007; Pg.3). The irony in that definition is that most children in welfare systems are not safe and neither do most children attain permanency. Child welfare systems are a dangerous place for young children to enter.
Emotional neglect – “failure to provide adequate nurturing and affection to a child or the refusal or delay in ensuring that the child received the needed treatment for behavioural problems. It may also involve exposure to extreme domestic violence”. This could be seen as emotional neglect and he feels abandonment from his mother. He seems to feel that she no longer worries about him and is now more focused on her new husband. I also feel that they have failed to protect Alex from certain dangers which is shown in his fighting with one of his fellow peers at school.
Child abuse is a major issue, we can fix this issue by people realizing the causes, symptoms and after effect. As of 2015, 2,397 children are impacted by child abuse and neglect in the state of Indiana. The year of 1962 child protection became an organization. “5 children die every day as a result of child abuse or neglect.” Even though there are several organizations to stop child abuse, not all cases can be stopped and not all cases are reported.

Each year in America alone, an estimate of two million children, ranging from infants to teenagers go through minor or major kinds of abuse which include neglect, physical, emotional, and sexual maltreatment. It also indicates that child abuse is far more common in single-parent families than in families where both parents are
The consequences of neglect when children are expelled or leave their homes are very different, we can find the case of children who are working the streets and make their living that way, and we also have those who are found by social services themselves or seek help to overcome themselves. First let's see what happens to these children who can not get ahead, but make their lives on the street. The consequences of living alone on the streets at an early age are based on the risks it, many children on the streets end up being exploited for labor, as sex workers, drug dealers, killers, among others, because there is no adult liable to say or teach what is right and what is wrong, they just are influenced by what is happening around them. Can a history of childhood trauma have impact on happiness as an adult? I would conduct my study using the correlational method. My research would include children who have experienced trauma and see how they are coping. I would also interview adults who have experienced trauma as children and see how they are coping. I would listen for common threads, traits and experiences in their stories.
