The purpose of “Why, You Reckon?” by Langston Hughes is to accurately display, through the times of that century and human emotion, that despite money, power, and the color of your skin there can still be an unhappiness of the soul. There is evidence in the beginning of the short story of two men’s unhappiness in life the symbol of them being uncontent was their hunger. “Man, ain’t you hongry.... Well, sir, I’m tellin’ you, I was so tired and hongry and cold that night.” (253- 254).
“I Am Not Your Negro,” is not a documentary on Baldwin, and yet it is. The bright, infuriating and countless educated African American writer who belongs on any waiting list of the most significant American intellectuals of the 20th century. It is also a lot of other things, incorporating a visual-poetic paper outlining the surprising threads of similarity between America today and America in the mid-1960s , also an aim to intertwine the stories of 3 important Black leaders killed in that era, whom James knew well: Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X , and Medgar Evers. In the late ’70s, James set out to compose a book about those 3 men that he never completed. His incomplete notes for that assignment, which he intend to call “Remember This House,” are the beginning point for Peck’s movie.
12 Years A Slave 12 years of slave.png Twelve years a slave is written by Solomon Northup based on his true story fighting for his survival and freedom. He was abducted, abused and his identity and dignity was taken away from him. Northup was a free black man from upstate New York. In march 1834 the Northup’s family moved to Saratoga Springs of New York. He worked as a violinist and lived with his wife and two kids.
First ALot of african Americans didn't have a job or weren’t accepted in jobs. The whites could call a job and get a african american person fired. The poem written by Paul Laurence Dunbar i about how black were were getting treated differently. It was also about how black people had to wear mask because they felt like they had to hide their identity. Then the poem “Mother To Son” written by Langston hughes is about how life can get really challenging sometimes but you should never give up.
While one is never sure on the exact meaning or idea an author is trying to convey to their readers, Langston Hughes and Rudolph Fisher both have a clear message that coincides with one another, the Harlem Renaissance Era. Langston Hughes speaks about the outstanding literary movement the African American race was building. Whereas Rudolph Fisher speaks about the manner in which the Harlem Renaissance was managed. They both have similar arguments, and they communicate it across to the reader at times difficult yet with a plain understanding of what they want grasped.
The Harlem Renaissance was the peak of creativity for African Americans in art, music, and literature. African Americans were discovering self-love and how amazing the Negro actually was. The “New Negro” refused the commonly perceived slave image that many blacks were still viewed as. In Zora Neale Hurston’s essay, "How It Feels to Be Colored Me." , she also explains her life and what is was like to be her in the time during the Harlem Renaissance.
Solomon Northup, is the author of the book 12 Years a Slave. Northup describes himself as a free African-American that lives in Saratoga, New York with his wife and children. He is a multifaceted laborer and he is also earning a living as a violinist. In 1842, he was offered by two Caucasian men, a two-week tour as a musician in Washington, D.C. While Solomon believes he will be going on an out of town trip to play music, Northup was instead, drugged, kidnapped, and sold as a slave in the Region of New Orleans with the nickname ‘’Platt’’.
A LITERATURE CLASS ON THE WORKS OF ZORA NEALE One of the most memorable classes I had today was the literature class which was focused on Zora Neale Hurston's "How It Feels to Be Colored Me". The class was taught by Miss Tushabe, who was incredibly knowledgeable about Hurston's work and was able to bring the text to life for us. The main point of the class was to understand the personal experiences of Hurston, as a Black woman in America during the 1920s and 1930s, and how she used the essay to express her sense of self and identity.

The second way Langston Hughes shows his philosophical idea of equality is by showing his desire and dedication towards of achieving equality and shows off his dedication of hard work to achieve his dream but can’t due to of the barriers he has to overcome
How it Feels to Be Colored Me Commentary “How it Feels to Be Colored Me” was written by Zora Neale Hurston, an American author, and novelist. Throughout the piece, Hurston uses a series of literary devices to explain many conflicting emotions that she feels. The text begins with the life of Hurston as a child. She grew up in a small town that was predominately African-American. Within this town, she was well-known and often considered as a social butterfly.

The poem that I found most interesting was “Theme for English B” by Langston Hughes. This poem is written in a narrative style. The narrator is a young 22 year old black male college student in Harlem whose white instructor has given the assignment to go home and write something that is from himself and true. I identify with this poem because I was also once a 22 year old black male in Harlem. Although the time period between the two of us is more than a decade I am still able to identify with being in situations where I am the only black male in the room.
In the poem “Harlem” by Langston Hughes, several similes are used to portray the reality of dreams. Hughes employs effective metaphors, inviting us to visualize a dream and what may happen to it after it passes from conscious thought. Could a dream dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or even fester like a sore? (Hughes, 1951, p. 631).
