You see her name on the cover of the most famous book of the 20th century, To Kill a Mockingbird. Her name is Nelle Harper Lee. Nelle Harper Lee always said “The book to read is not the one that thinks for you, but the one which makes you think.” To Kill a Mockingbird is taught in 74% of the nation’s public schools, because of the thought that has to be put into the book and the learning experience you get from the book. After To Kill a Mockingbird was published in 1960, Nelle Harper Lee went on to win many awards for her hard work in writing. Nelle Harper Lee never wrote many books because she is such a mysterious person.

Childhood: Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926 in Monroeville, Alabama. Nelle Harper Lee is the youngest child in her family. As a young child, Nelle’s childhood friend was Truman Capote. Nelle and Truman used to climb up in their small tree house and read mystery books, and tell stories. Nelle’s father, Coley Lee, saw how much interest Nelle and Truman took in reading and figured they would like writing too. So Coley Lee decided to buy Truman and Nelle a typewriter.
