Net Neutrality Argument Essay

With the internet being such an important part of people’s lives and businesses bottom line, it is vital to insure that the future of the internet will help us continue to innovate. The debate between net neutrality and the opposition started back in the early 2000’s with papers starting to be published about the topic in 2003 [1]. The legal battles between the government and internet service providers (ISP’s) over net neutrality started back in 2005 with the Internet Freedom Preservation Act [2]. A couple of years ago it seemed as though the term “net neutrality” was being thrown around by every major news outlet. I will then talk about the fact that if net neutrality regulations were truly going to make the internet worse Google would not be for it. “What’s good for the internet is good for Google.” Neither would other huge tech companies that want the internet to be as good as possible such as Apple and Microsoft [9].
Another common argument against net neutrality is that it will ruin the profits of the ISP’s. I plan to then discuss how it was recently reported that Time Warner (Comcast) was making 97% gross profit margins from its internet service [8]. Obviously at 97% they have plenty of room for decreased profits. I will compare their profit margins to other companies to show how absurd it is.
I would also like to write a short bit about how much a company like Google and Microsoft help make the world better compared to time warner who does next to nothing. This will help nullify the counter argument to the above paragraph of “but Google, Microsoft, and Apple make a lot of money too!!!” I will then show how time warner purposely slowed down Netflix traffic to try to keep their cable
