Australian politicians can always improve laws to have better enforcement and more justified outcomes, however, there are new laws that are needed and do benefit our community. The politicians have the power to change a law and decipher a more justified punishment for those who breach a law. I believe that politicians have the authority to review laws that have been made for serious problems and can recognise where stricter outcomes and other improvements are necessary. There has been proof that a new law can be enforced and benefit Australia in a way that ensures citizens a safer environment to live in. This is because updating old laws to become beneficial to our community can help decrease rates of serious issues such as murder and rape. Lawyers for the Director of Public Prosecutions’ have given the statistics that thirteen of fifty-six rape sentences in 2009, were inadequate, and that sentences during that year ranged from eighteen months to fourteen years. Nowadays, rape sentences are longer than the average prison term for manslaughter (according to the Ministry of Justice figures). Crime statistics show that Assault and Property damage offences have been reported over forty thousand times and other harassment offences have been reported over five thousand times in 2013 and 2014. This information clearly proves that laws are in need of change to more acceptable sentences so that these crime rates can decrease to a smaller amount.
