Following Hurricane Katrina in September 2005, the New Orleans education system has been subject to an extensive process of reformation. In this time period, there has been a great change in enrollment percentages, and large shifts in student diversity learning atmospheres. Additionally, there has been a great change in the perception of different public schools. Communities’ attitudes about education have shifted, even grown. This has pointed out the importance of quality education for students. Adjacent to the shift of gears in enrollment in public schools and how they are viewed, there has also been a large trial to better the resources given by a public school. Following the devastation brought by Hurricane Katrina, the New Orleans education system was destined to reestablish a group of students. Many families were spread all over the country, causing enrollment in New Orleans to plummet. Momentum for the rebuilding of the education system took a roll as residents began returning home. Charter schools took a rise post Katrina. Most of the public schools in New Orleans are now charter schools. Charter schools bring more options and diversity to the public education system. This catches the eyes of families looking for a substitute to public schools. The expansion of charter schools allowed growth in options for education that are available to students in New Orleans. This has contributed to the increase in enrollment percentages following families deciding on the recent up and coming school choice. Also, changes in population have influenced shifts between specific schools and populated districts in total. In the midst of the developments, there have been efforts to highlight the high-quality learning had at the overachieving charter schools. Institutions with students who do not place highly on the grading scale can be subject to the renewal of the charter school. On the other hand, there is an increase in homing in on the importance of academic placement. This will increase standard GPA’s and inadequate standardized test scores. The heightened focus on uplifting testing scores calls for other subjects to fall short. For instance, the creative arts. For students, with special talents, it is imperative to supply them with an outlet to grow their talents and supply them with an outlet. Many public schools in New Orleans have begun implementing an initiative that allows students to stay at their existing school while also being enrolled in the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA). NOCCA is a free tuition center meant to train and provide students with a way to excel in the arts. The schools allowing the said dual enrollment are providing their students access to a balanced education, valuing the importance of creative expression.
