Since the early 1200’s, when Chinese fire arrows were first invented, scientists have been devising fundamental theories surrounding the principles and evolution of larger rockets. The foundations of modern rocketry began most significantly in the 20th century. Although these foundations were devised over long periods of time, most began after Newton’s laws of motion were published in 1687.
Not only did Newtons laws of motion aid the development of military rockets; they also allowed specific variations to be made that enhanced rocket engine power and allowed a greater speed to be achieved. Continuous experimentation led to the discovery that the best design incorporated a small rocket on top of a larger one, that was fired after the first had burned out. This multi stage rocket allowed for larger thrust enabling rockets to travel further distances across the globe and also to reach as high as earth orbit. This allowed the possibility of space travel to finally being considered a reality.

Not only do they assist in the placement of satellites and probes in space; their capability to travel over long distances at high speeds due to their liquid-fuel propellant allows for the development of man’s capability to work in the lunar environment.
