The Cold War was a political conflict between the U.S. and the Soviet Union that lasted about 45 years. The original dispute was that the USA did not want communism to spread to other parts of the world. Named after President Harry Truman, the Truman Doctrine was credited as one of the actions that began the Cold War because it was an American foreign policy. The Truman Doctrine aimed at stopping the Soviet Union from spreading communism. Both governments tried to gain impact in the political arena by putting their economic and military power into more small proxy wars with other countries in their alliances. Western Europe needed this aid to help repair the aftermath of WWII and to counteract the Soviets trying to spread communism. The Marshall Plan was when the United States donated more than 12 billion dollars to multiple countries in Western Europe. (Marshall Plan source). The Marshall Plan aimed to help Europe retrieve economic self-reliance and to help rebuild and modernize significant industries. Since the U.S. sent this money to these parts of Europe, U.S. officials hoped that would convince them to turn away from communism and join forces with the U.S. to stop the Soviets instead. If not for the Cold War, parts of Europe would not get the resources to rebuild after WWII. The Truman Doctrine declared that the U.S. would supply political, military, and economic aid to all nations under threat from outside forces. It provided $400,000,000 worth of assistance to Greek and Turkey (Truman doc). The U.S. benefitted Greece and Turkey so they would not turn to communism because the U.S. needed them as allies again the Soviet Union. The Truman Doctrine was seen as picking sides by aiding countries that could have turned communist. The Greek and Turkish governments greatly benefitted from this aid by defending them from Soviet aggression. Many weapons, including the hydrogen bomb, were in conversation due to the Cold War. New war tactics and organizations were also developed, such as NATO.. The hydrogen bomb was designed to have an advantage over the Soviet Union. The U.S. increased the danger of weapons to threaten, intimidate, and taunt the Soviet Union by creating weapons like the Hydrogen bomb. Another war-related thing that the Cold War provoked was NATO. NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. NATO's purpose was to defend Western Europe from the Soviet Union and to stop them from spreading communism The Soviet threats on Western Europe prompted twelve countries to organize to keep international peace. (North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) source). Since then, NATO has done many beneficial things, such as counteracting international terrorism through maritime surveillance.
