Football is one of the most popular sports in the U.S. A lot of people love watching and playing football, but don’t know much about where the sport came from or a lot about the game itself. They might even get it confused with soccer! 1. 100 years of the NFL! The NFL was created on August 20, 1920. The actual association was created a year later. They didn’t call it the NFL back then because they hadn't created the name yet, they called it the American Professional Football Conference. Almost 100 years of football and only 52 Super Bowls? The first team names in the NFL were a little odd. There were only 11 teams back when they first started to today’s 32. This probably was hard for the league to play tournaments because it wasn’t an even number. The team names varied from the Cleveland Indians to the Dayton Triangles! What were they thinking! 3. Team Survival In 1927, the teams were struggling with money so the NFL decided to cut the teams that aren’t economically stable and keep the ones who are. The cuts decrease the number of teams from 22 to 12! They made so many teams for nothing and eventually got every single one cut except for one. Because at the beginning they had eleven and now they have twelve! It also moves the league’s center of gravity from small midwestern towns to larger eastern cities. 4. Did anyone actually watch the first game on T.V? The first game that was aired on television, was held in 1939. NBC produced the local broadcast for the game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Philadelphia Eagles.
