Ngo Dinh Diem was the first president of South Vietnam. Ngo led the effort to create the Republic of Vietnam. His family was Roman Catholic and his father was a counsellor to the Vietnamese emperor. Ngo was a nationalist and an anti-communist. Ngo refused invitations to serve as a premier and instead tried to convince the Japanese to let Vietnam have their independence from the French. He travelled to Hue in September 1945 to stop Bao Dai from joining forces with Ho Chi Minh. Ngo was captured by Viet Minh agents along the way and was taken to Ho Chi Minh.
