Nonprofits are changing young adults lives by providing them with the basic necessities till they are able to support themselves. Nonprofits provide more than just foster care for young adults. One example would be efforts from the Salvation Army. They are a nonprofit organization that provide many services. The first service they provide are meals and food to people in a hard spot in their life. Volunteers make the meals and set up stations available to people who qualify for the extra help (Basic par. 2). The Anti-hunger organization also helps increase public awareness and provide meals to people in need just like the salvation army (Food par.1). The first benefit would be finding peoples inner self. People who volunteer find a sense of empowerment within themselves. They feel like they are making a difference little by little. They improve and teach themselves in the process also (Borus 19). Another characteristic that they find is self confidence. They will help out with a job and get better in that area and slowly build up more confidence within themselves and use that toward other aspects in life. Some one that is shy may find their self esteem with in volunteering because they have to step out of their comfort zone and work in the areas that are troublesome to them. They can use the areas that they improved to help build up self esteem and confidence level also. Not only can they gain self esteem and confidence, but they will be able to gain some life satisfaction and find a purpose for themselves if they do not already have some (Saisan par. 6). Finally, when people volunteer they can find a sense of pride and identity. They are proud of the work that they completed and find people that they belong with and have similar interests (Saisan par. 8). Studies have shown that when people volunteer it triggers a release of hormones, that make people feel great about themselves, which in turn helps the mental and physical side of people (Borus 26). In research they have also found that with all the self finding and positive energy that volunteering is a stress reliever and can help battle depression. This happens because people stay in regular contact with others which helps take their mind off personal issues and helps them focus at the task at hand (Saisan par. 7). The physical health is covered by some volunteer jobs require physical activity which is a great way to blow off stress. Finally, studies have found that people that volunteer have a lower mortality rate than people who do not volunteer, because volunteering lowers the symptoms and risk of chronic pains and heart disease (Saisan par. 8). Nonprofits help people find themselves through volunteering as well as keep them mentally and physically sharp. In addition to finding people inner self and having better mental and physical health, volunteering through nonprofits offer many beneficial opportunities. One of the opportunities would be exploring interests and passions in an area. If people are not sure if they like an interest, they can find a nonprofit organization that works in that area.
