On june 6, 1944 the day of the allied powers crossed the english channel and landed on the beaches of
normandy. With Hitler's armies in control of most of the main land in Europe the allies knew that that a
successful invasion of the continent was central to winning the war. Hitler new this to he was expecting a assault.
On the morning of june 5 1944, U.S. general Dwight D. Eisenhower, the supreme commander of the allied forces in Europe gave the go-head for operation overlord the largest military attack in the history when 156,000 Americans landed on 5 beaches along a 50 mile stretch. On that day british bombers dropped more than 5,000 tons of bombs on german gun batteries placed at the normandy assault area while 3,000 allied ships cross the english channel in prepare for the invasion. During the invasion there was still bad weather and had to wait till june 6 to attack and went to the beach.
On that week of the war more than a million troops landed on the battlefield and were ready to fight.
Before the invasion a message was sent to german troops about the attack hitler was asleep when the message was sent no one dared to wake him up. fatal time was wasted while they waited for hitler to wake up the invasion was near and they prepared for the attack. The invasion started on the beaches there were five names used in this war the names of the beaches were Utah,omaha,gold,and sword but neptune was the codename for landing. Omaha beach suffered the most casualties many americans lost their lives because german troops were shooting from the top of the cliff.
