Leadership Style
This paper will discuss leadership and the role of the new graduate nurse. The authors quiz results will be explored and how her leadership style has impacted her current beliefs. This paper will also discuss the qualities of leadership for the graduate level nurse. This paper will examine the authors leadership characteristics including the ones she would like to develop. Lastly this paper will finish with a quotation from an article pertaining to leadership in the advanced practice nursing role.

NGNs can develop these various skills through organizational strategies, educational strategies, or personal strategies (St-Martin, Harripaul, Antonacci, Laframboise, & Purden, 2015). The NGN can expand their organizational strategy by building proper resources within their organization. Working with others and establishing a successful work environment will ensure the NGN in gaining the added skill needed as a leader. Education strategies can be improved by exploring the different leadership opportunities available. The NGN can enroll in educational programs, utilize evidence based practice, and develop their skills through web based learning (St-Martin et al., 2015). Personal strategies can assist the NGN when dealing with stressors. The NGN can work on building personal relationships and learn ways to cope with their feelings when overwhelmed. In the leadership role, the NGN should be healthy and resilient to carry on this role (St-Martin et al., 2015). The leadership qualities she embraces are that of a democratic leader in that she seeks others input regularly. The author is honest and fair and prides herself on building quality relationships. The author is continually seeking educational opportunities to build her skills as a leader. One area the author feels is lacking in her leadership is creativity. Creativity is an area she hopes to strengthen by furthering her education, journaling, and brainstorming. Another area the author would like to improve is her sense on authority. The author is an expert nurse but taking on the leadership role of an NP will take time to develop. As a NGN, the author will have authority over patients and other staff in the workplace. A good leader has authoritative skills that enable them to lead those around them. To build these skills the author would likely need the support of senior NPs. Senior NPs can assist her by supporting her with educational sessions, as well as her seeking support from physicians and other colleagues (Fitzpatrick & Gripshover, 2016).
