Leadership My leadership style is participative leadership. Participative leaders use a participation process through which those who are affected by the change are brought to understand the change through ongoing discussion. Input from group members encourages participation in problem-solving strategies. This stimulates the team to be more effective with better decision-making skills and more favorable outcomes (Pakkeerappa, 2014). Every member is included and their opinion valued within the domain of their area of expertise. These leadership skills are culminated during graduate education through a process of improving communication skills, supported risk taking, reflective learning, and interactions with nurse leaders, mentors, and role models (Hamric et al., 2014). Although, the degree in which the APN is involved in leadership has to do with personal interests and involvement, the graduate level nurse?s role is one that requires leadership skills. There is a trickle down effect with pessimistic leaders. It starts at the top and works itself down. As I mentioned before, I work in a cardiac catheterization unit. By nature, the unit is unpredictable. We have emergencies, unexpected findings, long cases, short staff ratios, and big physician egos within a small confined space. When our department leaders are having a bad day, we are all having bad days. During those moments, I try to remember that my goal is to finish the day I started. Sometimes writing a gratitude list works. Writing tangible proof of all of my many blessings will take the despair out of any situation I may be facing.
As I mentioned earlier, I am an active person. Exercise is a huge part of my mental well-being. I have never come back from a run upset or angry. Endorphins are my best medicine. In addition to exercise, I try to eat a healthy diet. I do not drink alcohol and I get plenty of rest. I try to encourage those around me to do the same but what I have found to be the most efficient in lifestyle modification is to lead by example. My one vice is coffee. I can?t imagine my life without good
