My interest for Biology grew in high school when our teacher, Mrs. Sumi took us out in the fields to observe the surrounding nature. She told us to roam through the fields and note down all the characteristics of all the living organisms we saw. Initially many of us complained about walking through the field in the day with the sun overhead. But we were soon so engrossed with the task that none of us realized how long we were observing the nature and noting down the organisms. After that day it was like I was hooked to the subject. I made my dad buy me books on plants and animals. As a result, there are not many research opportunities available for undergraduate students. However, I was fortunate enough to be accepted as a Field Experience trainee for six months in Dhaka Hospital at International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) for my undergraduate thesis project. For my thesis project I worked out to determine the prevalence of Iron Deficiency Anemia in the young children of rural Bangladesh. Although, actual field experience was limited to me, as a trainee, I was allowed to observe the tests carried out and learn about the procedure used. As a trainee, I was able to learn about many techniques used by researchers and how to handle different technical equipment. I was also able to work with my external supervisor and find out about how to write a good research paper. I learnt the basic methods of effectively using the sources available to me and the ways to avoid plagiarism when writing my paper. I am certain I still have much to learn in the future, but the experiences I have had and the knowledge I acquired will help me to pursue higher education.

I have limited work experience to date. I have worked as a part-time Biology teacher in QED academy and then as Teaching Assistant in North South University. Other than the skills of communicating with people, taking directions well and admitting mistakes; the most important skills I learned was the importance of respecting one’s opinions and teamwork.
