Nursing Student Not-For-Profit Hospital Mission Statement

The current healthcare organization such as the hospital has grown from a public nonprofit organization, providing charity care to the ailing poor to one that depend on profit to survive. It wasn’t until the twentieth century that a number of for-profit hospitals made their inauguration in the U.S. With that said, according to the American Hospital Association’s 2010 survey data, more than a third of community hospitals in the U.S. are for-profit (AHA, 2010). As God’s children there should not be a time when it is forgotten in regards to the reason for our existence and what our primary responsibility is as health care leaders. The purpose is to provide those that come to the infirmary at their weakest and most vulnerable moments with safe, effective, timely, high quality health care services delivered in a respectful, caring, compassionate, honest and kind way. The operations need bare minimum profits so that they can continue providing the required services to the needful patients. There cannot be any business without any mission and a mission loses its meaning if the business is not profitable. A mission statement defines what an organization is, why it exists, its reason for being. Therefore, although healthcare is a humane arena, hospitals operate as business units which should generate minimum revenues and margins to stay afloat and continue providing their services. No mission, no soul refers to the philanthropic and altruistic part of being in healthcare business. If a business doesn’t have a mission and is not generating enough margins, it can never divert funds towards philanthropic activities. Hence mission, margin and soul, i.e. compassion towards humanity are all linked in case of hospitals and all three reinforce each
