Hero vs Villain. The extract 3 does not only illustrate Obama’s attempt to gain sympathy from the American citizens, but it also show how Obama attempts to demonize Gaddafi’s personality vis-à-vis American citizens. Obama’s strategy is to portray Them-Gaddafi’s regime has the villains and We-The American people as hero who is going to prevent a massacre and save thousands of lives. In addition, Obama’s comparison between Benghazi and Charlotte is aimed at bringing fear into American citizens’ minds and gain their continued supports to use the American military to prevent mass atrocity from happening. This was a measure put in place to trap the leaders of the legitimate Libya and also to cut off Gaddafi and his people from the outside world (including any of his allies in other governments and nations: all members of the African Union were also barred from entering Libya). Libya, had fast falling to the roving Al-Qaeda mercenaries and criminal rebels on the ground while simultaneously having its resources, infrastructure and cities bombed by NATO air-strikes, was entrapped with no way out and moreover with no way to express the truth of the situation to any outside observers. The resolution passed by the UN Security Council on 17th March authorized member states "to take all necessary measures... to protect civilians and civilian populated areas". What this really meant was 'all necessary measures... to protect rebel-held
