According to Harvard Men's Health Watch, “In less than 40 years, the prevalence of obesity in the U.S. has increased by over 50%, so that two of every three American adults are now overweight or obese”("Obesity in America: What's driving the epidemic?"). The issue of obesity in America has grown over the years. Many adults are having weight problems now more than ever. There are many reasons why it is such a big problem, but in America, one thing that stands out is the food industry. There are so many unnecessary ingredients that are not commonly known to the public which makes consumers not realize what they are truly eating. The food industry's main goal is to make more money and that is exactly what they do. They create products that are cheap and unhealthy and sell them to the public. While you can see what is in the food, it is not known to people because what people are eating is not healthy. Because of this obesity has risen among Americans. An article from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health talks about the causes of obesity and it also talks more in-depth about why the food industry is doing so well. It states, “The incessant and unavoidable marketing of unhealthy foods and sugary drinks. The lack of safe areas for exercising. The junk food sold at school, at work, and at the corner store” ("Obesity Causes | Obesity Prevention Source | Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health."). Based on this information the marketing and where the food is being sold are the main issues, but also reasons why the food industry does so well. When it mentioned “ incessant and unavoidable marketing” it expresses that the marketing by these big corporations is so noticeable that it draws in more consumers. When it also mentions “junk food sold at school” it demonstrates another example of how the food industry is so well known. It is sold at everyday places where Americans are, which makes it so accessible for people. Having the food available for anyone to buy makes it convenient. Another quote talks about how fast food is accessible to the public. In an article by The National Library of Medicine, they took surveys to see how common it was for people to eat fast food. It states “Fast food is defined by convenience food purchased in self-service or carried out eating venues without wait service” (A, Mohammadbeigi).
