As of 2013, 94% of schools failed to meet the U.S Agriculture food safety requirement, 98% of these schools are public schools funded by the government. Nearly a third of these public school students are either overweight or obese. With the rise of our economic debt and unemployment rate, how do we solve the obesity epidemic of children in public schools? By simply banning our nation’s “infamous” processed and junk foods that batter the health of those who consume them, we can kill the source of many of our health problems while prompting change for a healthier American diet.
Many children, if not all, have been subjected to the advertisments of multi-billion dollar corporations such as Hostess, McDonalds, and Mars, who wholeheartedly cling to processed foods, and then market the food to children. By definition, “food processing is the transformation of raw ingredients, by physical or chemical means into food, or forms of food into other ingredients.” For example taking an ear of corn and breaking it down on a molecular level, and transforming it into a sugary soda. A small percent of students waited to spend the money — choosing to bring a lunch from home until Friday, when they will reward themselves by spending all $5 at once. Most others began spending the allowance on the food provided by local restaurant’s while focusing on figuring out which meal they can get the fastest and cheapest. In conclusion, this study shows’ the effect of what the idea of “quality over convenience” has on our nation’s youth.
