Love is an idea that dominates our media. In movies, songs, TV shows, and literature, this topic can make for captivating drama as characters triumph over obstacles with the power of love. After all, the concept of true love overcoming hardships makes for an empowering story. But not all tales of love end in a happily-ever-after. Not all love trumps oppression. Not all love is seen as equal. Some love is forbidden, bound by restrictions created by onlookers or by the lovers’ own situations. Shakespeare’s play, “The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet” serves as a cautionary tale for modern society, as it shows that we should accept our differences and the diversity in how we love.
