Organizational culture can either have a positive or negative impact on changes (Rubenfeld & Scheffer, 2009). Obstacles within a organizational culture that can negatively impact changes include: territorial behaviors, not being open to new ideas or changes, and poor communications among team members. In order to implement new changes successfully the organizational culture need to involve team members from all disciplines in the decision making process, empower team members to think creatively to problem solve and educate patients on health concern, and clarify team roles. Interdisciplinary team consists of members form multiple disciplines with specialized knowledge, skills, and methods. Working as a team decreases the utilization of redundant and/or duplicate services as this approach pool resources from multiple disciplines allowing for a individualized care plan (O’Daniel & Rosenstein, 2008). O’Daniel and Rosenstein (2008) reported that patients prefer to work with a cohesive team of providers, rather than multiple providers who know nothing of their ongoing cares.
Effective Communication Communication is important when working with a team to provide the best patient-centered care as it is the foundation of a functional interprofessional team. Clear communication between team members decreases errors, thereby improving overall quality of care for patients (Lancaster et al., 2015). According to Lancaster et al. (2015) to be an effective team, each team member needs to a have a clear understanding of their role and how each individual contributes to the care of the patient.
