Conducting research on my career choice in the Occupational Outlook Handbook and O*Net database, I learned many informational things on my career such as job outlook, skills, work context, and much more. According to my research in the OOH, the 2012 median pay was $53,090 per year, and for entry level education, a Bachelor's degree is required. I’ve learned that elementary school teachers prepare younger students for future academics by teaching them the basics such as math and english. Some tasks that are required that I’ve learned when being a teacher include: instructing individuals and groups, enforcing rules to students, and meeting with parents/ guardians for conferences. Some tools and technology that are essential to teaching are photocopiers, board games, and laminators. Basic technology is required to be an elementary school teacher such as computer softwares, emailing softwares, graphics and photo editing, and microsoft documents/powerpoints. It is essential to be up to date with technology because in today’s society, most children have accessibility to the internet which would enable them to have email contact with the instructor. Learning the basics of powerpoints and documents is also essential because most teachers have access to projectors which means that they are able to teach their students through presentations which they can make themselves. English, Psychology, Mathematics, Sociology, and training is very important into becoming a teacher. English and Math is an obvious requirement to become a teacher because it is something we all use from a day to day basis. Sociology is necessary to become a teacher because it is important to understand group behavior, social trends, ethnicity, cultures, and origins of these students. Psychology is crucial to teaching because it is important to understand human behavior, personality, interests, and motivation. Putting all of this knowledge into effect is important because it enables the instructor to understand their students better. I’ve also learned the skills required for this career which include: instructing, speaking, and activity.
