I chose Occupational Therapy as my career path for many reasons, first of which is my passion for the promotion of health and seeing others achieve the personal goals most important to them. I have always been passionate about health and knew I would be pursuing some career path in medicine. While searching the various health career pathways, I found myself falling in love with occupational therapy. I saw a huge need for this as an occupation in the world, as many of us don’t realize how important independence is, until it is taken away from us. Occupational therapy is all about the daily tasks that bring the most satisfaction to our lives and allow us to have routine in our day, leading to an independence that many people take for granted. Professionally, it will allow me to achieve my goals of improving the health of others while acting positive and supportive as an exceptional therapist should. Occupational therapy school will grant me the knowledge and skills I need in knowing how to achieve the end results I achieved while recovering from surgery. These included everything from eating and toileting to learning math and writing. By assisting these children from ages 5 to 18, I not only gained knowledge far beyond what I imagined I would, but I grew as a person. I developed a passion for assisting children in daily tasks and helping them advance in the school system. I have also worked as a rehabilitation technician for St. Luke’s South for over a year where I assist therapists in daily activities such as helping a patient shower or with stability and mobility exercises. I have received training in the hospital’s EPIC patient system, and also in the MSSS ordering system for St. Luke’s South. I have seen how therapists interact with their patients and how they manage their daily tasks and activities. I believe this will set me apart as I learn from them and I apply it to my own practice. I have also grown in an understanding of the human body and general health from my experience as a personal trainer. As a personal trainer I love seeing my patients progress in their health and fitness and muscular strength to where they are able to be functional in ways they never though possible.
