I thought to myself, “Was it all worth it?” and quickly dismissing this idea. I came to realize that I didn’t need something solid reference to this achievement, that the knowledge that I could accomplish anything with determination and a little creativity was
For documentary film maker DJ Scripz, making connections within the Haitian community is important. His film, The Haitian Polo Documentary by DJ Scripz, tells the real stories of Haitian immigrants who fled their home nation during the ‘80s and ‘90s to relocate in Brooklyn, NY, only to be met with the tumult and violence that was plaguing the city at the time. While the most significant feat for Haitians growing up in ‘80s and ‘90s Brooklyn was to be accepted into urban America, DJ Scripz refocuses on making connections across the Haitian community to explore the collective experiences of young Haitian immigrants and to preserve their memories in history.
I walked into my house the door wide open and a damn sword stuck the ceiling; I could see the back yard with a crapload of holes in it again. This is the last time I am going to let my roommate bring his crazy gofer friends over again. The last party they had the gofers brought over some woodchuck prostitutes and they chewed off all my legs to the table, who know what they did with them. This GSCA group gets way out of hand. That is Gofers Society for Creative Anachronism.
During Labor Day Weekend, I had a hockey tournament in Anaheim with my travel team and we won all of our games but one. Our team lost to one undefeated team that we had to play in the final. We were the underdogs, but our team still managed to win. When I skated up to try and score a goal, I got tripped and got a penalty shot, a chance to score. I knew I had to score to get our team the lead and the pressure only made it more nerve racking.
“You two, get the ball down the pool and take a shot, just make sure it’s inbounds, don’t worry if you miss the goal, Kenzie will get the rebound.” My coach has barked these orders on numerous occasions throughout the year and it has never failed to give me a little thrill inside. As an athlete that tends to go unnoticed, getting acknowledgement in such an offhand way is pretty exciting. It shows me I have a place on the team, a job that my team depends on me to do. Water polo is a very difficult sport.
My mama had finished her story by telling me she’d been mortified and didn’t know what to do. So, she did what I guess anyone in her situation would have done. She left. The funny thing is though. At the time of all this happening, she’d been standing in line behind Kolinski at the checkout holding a package of aspirin and some salve ointments for me that were supposedly good for curing poison ivy.
Despite not placing in the competition, participating in the FBLA county competition was important to me because of the valuable lesson I learned. I had a long speech prepared that I had spent several days preparing and memorizing, and was confidant that I was going to ace it. But the second I stood in front of the judges, I stumbled over my words, lost my place on my note cards, and was so eager to get it over with i rushed through the rest of my speech and didn 't make the time limit. I was so prepared to give a winning speech, i was dissapointed in my inadequacy. Noticing my disappointment, when my adviser came to discuss the performance, he told me he was proud.
On Spetember 21 at 7:30 in Williams Hall, I participated in a piano concert performed by Mrs. Kristi Helfen and Mrs. Pamela Martin. What’s even more surprising was that this performance is not only a simple piano concert. Rather, it was a four hands piano concert that required much more proficiency in piano. In this concert, they performed several renowned songs: Overture to Orchestral Suite in D major, BMV 1068 by Bach, Grnde Rondo in A Major D. 951 by Schubert, The Frolics of a Band of Children by Villa-Bobos, Sonata in F major, K. 497 by Mozart, and Marche Ecossaise sur un Theme Populaire by Debussy. Mrs. Kristi Helfen was a dedicated piano educator in Oxford College of Emory University and a freelance piano performer.
It wasn’t even the third quarter and we were losing by 12 points. This water polo game was already a loss before the game even started. I knew that our team had no spirit to defeat Newberg, the back to back to back state champions. Newberg throughout the whole game commanded the lead with physicality and speed. Every single Newberg player was ready to counter attack when we made a mistake.
This gave me a sense of achievement and accomplishment. Most of the time success doesn't come easily, but as long as you preserve, you will surely be
Beginning in the early modern era, European nobility and merchant classes—now unlimbered by the feudal economy of the Medieval Era, set their sights away from sustainability and began to search for new routes of trade and capital. In order to do so, European exploration began to focus upon descriptive and social-scientific accounts of other cultures. These travel writings served as the foundation for the reasoning behind European expansionism and conquest beginning in the late 15th and early 16th century. Despite their often grandiose and even falsified accounts, historian Charles Parker notes that these writings “found a ready market among urban elites, aristocrats, and churchmen.” These early ethnographic and travel writing’s problematic
I had never been more proud of myself knowing that I am so much stronger than I had ever thought. After that week I found a job, started exploring colleges, and made new friends for the upcoming year. That one day changed my perspective on what is ahead for me and who I can be. That is why I aspire to attend the University of Chapel Hill to prove to myself that I am not average, but, I am exceptional and deserve to be at an exceptional
However, what I most proud of is tripling average attendance at professional events from what it was historical. Although it was quite difficult to get attendance up initially I learned a few tricks about preparing and executing a successful event. The two biggest keys to increasing attendance are being enthusiastic throughout the process and ensuring that you are prepared enough that the event will be effective for all in attendance. Ensuring effectiveness means you must be willing to take criticism from everyone. Learning from my peers’ criticism is something I believe I have done well
Describe a time when you overcame a serious challenge. Explain the details of the situation and how you handled things and worked through things. A serious challenge I have faced is growing up with my grandparents. While most people say that I’m so lucky for it there is a lot they don’t know.
A sense of accomplishment is invaluable to a person. Not only does a sense of accomplishment build confidence and faith in oneself, but it also allows one to reflect on how wonderful the journey to the accomplishment was, and how every little struggle and triumph was worth it. In the middle of summer, where time seems endless and the stress of the previous school year has been shed by students, I never expected to find out that I scored a five on both of the advanced placement exams I took. Nor did I have one-hundred percent confidence the goals we set as section leaders of the marching band would actually be met. Yet to my surprise, I had the good fortune of accomplishing challenging things in both aspects of my life.
