Response Paper: Three

Online video documentaries are a great alternative to in class power points and lectures. Actually, alternative is not the proper term to describe them as I feel they’re not so much an alternative but another method to provide the information from a different angle. I’m kind of on the fence regarding how I feel about using them as a teaching aid. Depending on the length and quality of the video, it may be hard to stay focused and aware for the whole thing.

Many factors come into play as I evaluate videos. A seemingly minor detail like the narrators voice and tone can completely turn me off and lose my attention from the very start of the video. I can only think of positive aspects concerning this video. It was fifty-one minutes long, which is almost identical to our normal class length. The narrator’s voices weren’t too monotone and kept my attention. I also enjoyed the fact that there was both a male and female speaking at different points in the video. I feel this change of sound and tone keeps this interesting in a sense. Most importantly, the content discussed in the video was quite intriguing. I was completely unaware of the fact that the British essentially tried to eliminate races of people. Also a top contender for best film is; Why the Industrial Revolution Happened Here. Once again, a video very similar in length to class, which is a good way to start things off. I felt from start to finish this video was loaded with fantastic detail and very critical information. Certain aspects like the problem solving required to resolve the flooding mine problem and not to mention Josiah Wedgewood’s marketing brilliance. Either of these two videos could be a wonderful addition to Lindenwood’s history
