Despite opposition to the movement, feminism battles constant stereotypes not only imposed upon women, but men as well. Simply, it’s a movement for human betterment, for human equality, and for human advancement. By ridding society of deeply ingrained, bigoted labels, feminism will succeed in the progression of more open-minded and accepting peoples. Purging gender expectations allows humans to avoid succumbing to discrimination driven by chauvinistic reasoning. A deep-seated superiority complex that those of the least oppressive gender/race maintain often blinds them of their own contribution to the struggle of equality for all.
Radical feminism arose out of the political activism present during the civil rights movement in the United States in the 1960s and soon spread to Canada and other parts of the western world (Reichert, 2016a) Whereas first wave feminists sought to fit women into existing structures, second wave feminists turned their lens to the public versus private sphere of women’s lives in the 1970s, particularly as they related to sexuality and violence. Imagine a world where women are objectified, treated as property, and have their opinions ignored. Visualization is hard, is it not? Prior to the Women’s Rights Movement, women were denied basic rights, such as the right to vote. As of 2014, 50% of all marriages end in divorce, but before the movement, women were not allowed to divorce their husbands. Even those who had committed crimes against them, such as rape (even though marital rape was not criminalized until 1993) or domestic abuse.
Feminism is more than about women, it is about empowerment and equality. It doesn’t seek female dominance or influence rich verses poor, and it doesn’t see race. Radical’s and different viewpoints alter this definition and give feminism a bad reputation. Most of the issues feminism battels is in the work place and organizations. For example, “Women in the U.S. who work full time, year-round are paid only 80 cents for every dollar paid to men — and for women of color, the wage gap is even larger,” (National Women’s Law Center).

Feminism is a misunderstood concept in today’s society. Many people believe that feminism is for woman supremacy; however, the real concept represents absolute human equality. Although America has been an independent country for 239 years now, various groups of people are still fighting the war of equality within our nation in hopes of freedom from prejudice based on race, gender, sexual orientation, and age. Due to many modernized feminist groups, the term ‘feminism’ has almost developed a negative connotation in today’s society and a multitude of people have forgotten the roots of feminism and all it stood for. Women have been fighting for the same rights as men since the beginning of time; however, their efforts were silenced until an empowered generation of women began to fight against societal beliefs that women were to be submissive under the fist of a man.

The feminist perspective is based on the notion that women are disadvantaged due to the structural position of men and women in society (White, Haines and Asquith, 2012). Distinctions between fact and value, subject and object, rationality and irrationality-all central to traditional social scientific thought are product of the male mind and as such must be transcended by feminists. This field of feminist assume that all the policies and subject matter emerge from a masculine world view which gives importance to subjects like policy making, national interest in terms of power while the radical feminists ask for a reformulation of these notions.
