Author and editor of two magazines, Lauren Tarshis in the essay, Is Facebook Making You Mean?, published on September 5, 2011 in a classroom magazine addresses the topic of online bullying through the popular social networking site, Facebook, and argues that these sites should be used responsibly to ensure the safety of all users. Tarshis supports her claim first by providing incidents and facts that prove the immense effects rude comments and thoughtless jokes have on the person receiving them. Second by, making an emotional appeal to her audience which creates a unity between the reader and writer. Finally by, establishing her credibility as a writer by providing an extensive amount of educated assertions supported by scientific studies.
Cyberbullying is generally geared towards the younger generation of the youth, however, there has been cases where adults have been victims as well. In 2008 there was a case of cyberbullying that was carried out by a Missouri mom Lori Drew where she concentrated a public spotlight on the damage and abuse that speech in social media can cause to children and even convinced the advancement of a new legal idea on how to approach to understand that harm and to deal with the harm. The 49 year old Lori Drew created a MySpace account by the name of “Josh Evans,” (Steinhauser, 2008, para. 8-11) who was a teenage boy. The purpose of the creation for this account was to begin a dialogue with her very own 13 year old daughter’s former friend Megan Meier.

Bullying has become an increasing problem because of the use of technology as a means of bullying in addition to the traditional type that many people are used to. Do you think that individuals should be prosecuted for statements made on social media? Technology is becoming a huge part of daily lives of teens. Cyberbullying is a very important topic to speak upon. By the results of a survey in 2006, we got to know that every 1 in 3 teens are a victim of cyberbullying. There are two sides to this topic which are that individuals should be prosecuted or should be trained.
I don't think people should be prosecuted for statements made on social media. As people say things about other people all the time talking about celebrities if people dislike a celebrity and openly talk about why would they be criminally prosecuted for hurting the other person's feelings? Should Individuals Be Prosecuted For Statements Made On Social Media? Have you ever thought about the consequences of cyberbullying? There can be a lot of consequences if you decide to cyberbully someone. If the statements you make are illegal, such as inciting violence or making threats, then individuals can and should be prosecuted for those statements and actions made. There are many ways cyberbullying can affect someone’s everyday life.
In this article, Jessica Mendoza argues that cyberbullies can be very harmful to children and teens as they grow up to be adult. She claims that Twitter, Facebook, and other chatting sites updated a protection for each user from cyberbullying. Parents don’t know what their children are doing in social media now a day. Resolving things like this situation makes children feel safer about what they do and makes them be more self-conscious about themselves. Mendoza offers a well- reasoned argument concerning policy changes in social media taking action into endorsing anti bullying.

In the article, Social Media as a Vector for Youth Violence: A Review of the Literature, (Patton, Hong, Ranney, Patel, Kelley, Eschmann, & Washington, 2014), they researched the ways in which social media relates to peer-to-peer violence. This was a study done from two surveys over a year’s period, with students ages 11-16. Cyber bullying is a major part of social media that is included in youth violence. Cyber bullying is defined as “A type of bullying involving the use of online or computer-mediated communication” (Patton et al., 2014). The researchers stated how cyber-bullying occurs in a variety of online settings and how instant messaging was the most common form of it.
The internet used to be a source for researching information, but today it is used as a battle field of hate and shame. Many people are using social media as a way of being spiteful and mean to others. People are sometimes being recorded against their will and placed on internet sites for other people to view.
