Since the introduction of organic farming in the 1940’s, the demand for ‘organic’ products has been on steadily rising due to the perception that they contain nutrients that are far healthier than the average fruit or vegetable. In the recent years, veganism and vegetarianism have become contemporary diet choices and with this, the organic food industries have become more and more popular. With strict requirements needed to classify a food as organic, the prices tend to be higher than that of regular fruits and vegetables due to them needing specific care. Despite the fact in organic food production pesticides cannot be used to assist the growth, it is acceptable if they are considered ‘natural’ and are not petrochemical fertilizers and pesticides. There are many advantages associated with consuming organically grown and raised foods. They can benefit one’s health status immensely and are safe to recommend to pregnant woman as it not only benefits themselves, but also the child they are bearing. As mentioned previously, organic foods lack pesticides and fertilisers, automatically revoking the potential health issues raised earlier in conventionally grown produce. Other health benefits can include reducing the chance of obtaining type 2 diabetes and adult obesity, reduced incidence of cardiovascular diseases, reduced vulnerability to heavy metal cadmium, commonly found in artificial fertilizers and a reduced risk of antibiotic resistance. Organic foods additionally contain higher traces of phytochemicals and vitamin C than conventionally grown produce. Phytochemicals are are non-nutritive plant chemicals that help protect the human body against diseases, this explains why when consuming a diet of organic foods, the likelihood of contracting previously mentioned diseases is reduced quite
