Chronic Illnesses like cancer, depression, and kidney disease diminish the quality of life. The pharmaceutical industry varies in medication to treat different illnesses and corresponding symptoms. Prescribed medication is said to be a method of curation; but there are other remedies that can be as effective. In our “Go Green” society, vitamins play an essential part of one’s diet. The promotion of natural food and supplement intake has escalated evermore today; due to new awareness of benefits acquired from organic sources like superfoods. Local physicians have treated ailments with prescribed medication, but a homeopathic therapy can also be considered an option. There is a controversy between orthomolecular specialists and doctors. Orthomolecular therapy consists of taking more than then the average dose of vitamins. For instance, the average intake of vitamins per day is 60-90 milligrams according to the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), however, Orthomolecular milligram dosage differs by being in the thousands. These large doses, according to these providers, support the body and dwindle the chance of vitamin deficiencies. Deficiencies arise in millions of people due to the body’s lack of nutrients. The decrease nutritional value can be consequently due to the community’s daily lifestyle of fast food and overcooked meals. Their theory is: no deficiency leads to no disease. Let’s take, statistically speaking, the most common chronic disease that we all will soon encounter in some point in our lives, depression. Depending on how severe the mental disorder has developed, the doctor can prescribe drugs to control the chemical imbalances of the brain causing emotional control. Orthomolecular specialist oppose that the usage of drugs is not the correct path to healthy living. They promote that the usage of vitamins prevent and diminishes illnesses. To illustrate, Prolactin is an antidepressant drug that is prescribed to patients that have depression. Now, the opposite path would be the intake of vitamin B, also known as niacin. For example, Dr. Andrew W. Saul viewed a patient with severe depression taking antidepressant drugs, she would not interact and eat with her family members. The patient would sit in the corner on a regular base. Her family members requested Dr. Saul for help, therefore, Dr. Saul injected the patient with enormous doses of vitamin B. Consequently, after the injections the patient started interacting and mingling with her family members as she used to. Having a big impact on the results, they took her to the doctor and mentioned the high dosage intake and immediately was told that the high dosage was not recommended and not to take them again because it can cause her harm. When she stopped using the injection she went back to her depressant stage. As we can see doctors could naïve to see the positive impact that these dosage have on patients, describing it as worthless. In conclusion, doctors strongly oppose of vitamin therapy, even though the evidence shows what method is more compatible to the
