The Author of this Assignment is a Health Care Assistant (HCA) student who is on work experience in a short stay hospital. For the purpose of this essay the author will highlight the skills that are involved in assisting a patient with bingo. The author will place emphasis on the communication, safety, and the promotion of independence with the patient throughout helping them with their activity. The author will also place emphasis on the importance of preserving the patient’s privacy and dignity throughout assisting the patient with bingo.

When the bingo has started the HCA will assist the patient by only helping them when they need their help. This maintains the patient’s independence and respect throughout the game of bingo. Sometimes the patient would forget some numbers so the HCA would help the patient by pointing to the number and repeating the number to the patient to remind them what the number is. The HCA will then allow the patient to slide down the number by themselves promoting the patients independence. When the patient has shouted bingo the patient then gets to pick out a prize from the prize box. The HCA will show the patient the prize box and allow the patient to pick out a prize for themselves.

While the HCA is carrying out the task the HCA must observe the patient while they are playing bingo. The HCA must look out for any signs of the patient starting to become stressed or upset due to the patient forgetting the numbers. The HCA must reassure the patient if they see any signs of the patient beginning to become upset or stressed. The HCA must also help the patient complete the task in calm manner.

When the bingo has finished the HCA will ask the patient if they wish to go back to their room or if the wish to stay in the day room for another while. When the HCA has established that the patient wishes to go back to their room the HCA will assist the patient back to their room. Once the patient is back in their room the HCA must ensure that the patient is comfortable and happy where they are. Once the HCA knows the patient is happy where they are the HCA will give the patient their call bell and remind the patient to ring their bell if they need any further assistance.
