Individuals go through a process, called socialization, by which they internalize the values, beliefs, and norms of a given society and learn to function as members of that society (Conley 118). In the essay, “Out-of-body Image” by Caroline Heldman the reader is exposed to a contemporary problem that women face in the modern world of consumerism. Heldman is effective in making her call to action in regards to the problem of self-objectification that has emerged through mass media by targeting women through an amalgamation of logical, ethical, and emotional appeals. Throughout the essay Heldman presents hard evidence to her audience in an attempt to win them over through stated facts which make the reader trust her. For instance, “ The APA found that girls as young as 7 years old are exposed to clothing, toys, music, magazines, and television programs that encourage them to be sexy or ‘hot’--”. By stating facts, Heldman presents her work as credible, essentially making her essay effective enough to revolutionize the way some women see themselves. Furthermore, within Heldman’s essay there is multiple times where she mentions well known schools of higher education or professors as tools of persuasion. For example, she mentions professor Kristen Harrison from Michigan Communications to talk about how self-objectification impairs girls’ motor skills. By mentioning that she is a professor, th e reader automatically views the source of information as credible. which eventually persuades the reader to her plead for action to take place. Lastly, through emotional appeals, Heldman is able to make the reader sympathize with a woman’s particular situation to show the severity of the extents which self-objectifying can reach.
