The Mirror of Literature Being able to have the tangible ability to change the values of one’s culture is the greatest power known to man. Literature is one of many powerful elements that has stayed the same throughout centries. The value literature has to a culture, is that it has the ability to reflect the actions of those in the society. The readings of a culture mirrors the mistakes of those part of the society, allowing them to realize their flaws and find resolutions. It is critical to dig deeper into literature and comprehend how it displays activity of a culture. I once made the mistake of seeing people with disabilities as an extremely different type of person than myself. That was before I read a story called Out of my Mind by Sharon M. Draper. It is written from the perspective of a young girl by the name of Melody, who has a disability where she isn't able to walk or speak. The author forces the words to scream out of the pages, telling her culture that these young people aren't different from anyone else, and deserve the same equality has others. I was then able to see my own actions in that story and change the way i was acting to better myself. …show more content…

As writers we perceive stories that portray human life through fictional characters. These characters often speak a message that is being persuaded by the author. It is hard to pinpoint a piece of literature that excludes beliefs of a culture, do to the fact that most authors have been exposed to world surrounding them. Because of this, they will grasp real-life events going on around them and transport them into a fictional story and present it to society as a mirror for which people can look at themselves and make amends where
