1.1 Definition of Cyberspace:

Cyberspace can be defined as a virtual medium by which individuals communicate and exchange data through a worldwide computer network and the internet. Cyberspace allows Australians to interact with each other and the world through the use of social media platforms, web forums, websites, electronic mailing systems and more. (Technopedia.com, 2018).

1.2 The Use of Cyberspace by Australians:

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics 86% of Australian Households have access to internet, with the highest age of internet users (98%) being 15-17 year olds. The most popular online uses of cyberspace which 80% of Australians used, was for entertainment, social networking and banking purposes. (ABS, 2016-17). There were also 15million active Australian users of Facebook, 9million Instagram users and 3million Twitter users in January 2018 alone. (Social Media News, 2018).

Due to the unregulated nature of the internet there are variety avenues by which individuals and large-scale groups can misuse it in a criminal and civil sense. (McIntosh, Cybercrime, 2002). Australians are commonly impacted by ransomware, hacking, malware, misuse of data, unauthorised cryptomining, and phishing. (CERT Australia, 2018).
