I used to think that college would be a chaotic bundle of stress about school: midterms, finals and grades. As it turned out, my experience as an undergraduate is composed of more issues than what I had anticipated. Money is always an issue. My status is always an issue. I noticed that I have been living under scarcity without putting much thought to it. I supposed I don’t put as much thinking to it because some things are just beyond my control. The obstacles I face at Davis start with the fact that I worry about not being able to pay my books or tuition or other fees that always come along. Secondly, I invest my time on school because this will become my future. I learn new things, I learn about new opportunities! For example, I am part of BUSP. My mentor mentioned that she had eight open spots for eight students to get involved in a research project regarding aging. These students would have the opportunity to work with prestigious professors and present at the National Research Conference. I was so excited. Then, she mentioned that it was a federal funded program with “restrictions”. Once again, I go back to zero. Obstacles come and go. I don’t find any barrier unusual. Simply, I try to find a new method that would allow me to get pass it. Personally, I keep on working on overcoming obstacles by moving forward and looking for new solutions that are within my sources.
