Everyday millions of people across the globe use the internet; many never even leave the computer desk. In the article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid” the author Nicholas Carr, brings up the point that our brains are losing their attention span. He explained that many, including himself, are finding it harder to read long groups of text and articles. Though Carr brings up a good point, his argument lacked factual information, was a little dull, contained next to no credible sources, and is all over the board with he’s ideas, all of these things made his argument weak. Carr’s opening paragraph really grabs your attention, by using quotes from the movie A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick’s.

Haley, I agree that it was petty that the queen decided to rage war over the bull it would 've been more understandable if it was something major. For an example the Trojan war was over Paris took Helen away from Menelaus that was utterly disrespectful, and no one can stand to be disrespected. However, yes, it was “trivial” but I think it 's important to kind of analyzing why she was upset about her husband having the bull. In reality you have individuals that place importance on things that they don 't have, despite them having everything and more. These people grow envious of something others might have and view it as a prized possession in this case the bull was the prize.
In the Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus faces many threats that could jeopardize his chance of coming back to Ithaca as the king. Odysseus faces the threats of losing his supporters on Ithaca, Losing his spot as king, and faces the threat of temptation. First, Odysseus faces the threat of losing the people that support him on Ithaca. He faces this threat because he has been gone for so long that hope in his return has been lost. Since he has been gone for so long, Ithaca has gone without a leader and has become a dirty and bad place.
This proves that Jack is confident about poetry because he is being inspired by other poetics and he is now starting to write his own poems. Throughout the book, Jack’s thoughts about poetry have grow from timid, then he changed to reluctant and enthusiastic, and now he is confident about poetry because he is now starting to enjoy poetry more and write his own
It was a joy to see both of these authors included in our list of required readings. Phillis Wheatley and Fredrick Douglas are both very talented writers who adopted their own way to tell their story. I appreciate how The University Alabama aims to educate its students about all backgrounds of people. I am sure many had never read the works of these artists prior to this
Alexa Gibbons Dr. Andrea Trapp Intro to Literature 1 March 2023 Essay One Poetry can be defined as the use of imaginative language in order to gain an emotional response from a reader through the use of metronomic rhythm, tone of voice, and symbolism. In this essay I will be using a poem entitled, “Alley” by Tom Chester in order to create a relationship between poetry and three different types of literary criticism; Reader Oriented Criticism, Historical Criticism, and New Criticism. This poem is derived from the Intro to Literature textbook written by William Stewart. The importance of understanding between these devices stems from the reader's impression of what is in front of them. The interesting aspect of poetry is that no person understands it the same way twice.
My AS course introduced me to works such as Remarque’s ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ and focused largely on the poetry of Wilfred Owen. Whilst I appreciated Owen’s intense compassion and complete immersion, I found my favourite poet from this era to be Isaac Rosenberg; though his poetry was largely anti-war, his symbolism implied richer significance. I greatly enjoyed this course, but am eager to discover a greater range of literature, as I will from exploring over 800 years of literature at University. This zeal to discover more led me to explore a wide range of eras and genres beyond our curriculum.

The Multiple Layers of Myths In ancient times, civilization would rely on myths passed down from generation to generation for entertainment, which eventually affects their everyday lives in one way or another. The Odyssey, translated by Robert Fitzgerald from Homer, is an epic poem illustrating the journey Odysseus took on his way home. On the other hand, Mythology, a book written by Edith Hamilton, describes the different perspectives Romans and Greeks have of mythological creatures, gods, and heroes. Common themes shared between both are: Actions are weighted by benefits of consequences, Fate is already written in one’s actions, and Betrayal can be the key to one’s downfall.
In The Odyssey, the Cyclops is a monster because of his key differences from mere human beings, specifically his lack of wit and of morals. Depicting these qualities as monstrous support that cleverness and a general regard for human life were heavily valued in Greek culture. Odysseus easily trick the Cyclops bragging, “I poured him another fiery bowl - three bowls I brimmed and three he drank to the last drop, the fool”(9.404-406). To describe the bowls of wine as fiery foreshadows the demise of the Cyclops. Odysseus was able to use his brain, not strength, to make the Cyclops drink himself into a stupor.
