I took part in the Moody 's Mega Math Challenge, a yearly mathematical modeling competition in which teams attempt to use mathematics as a predictive and analytical tool for discussing a given problem. The Challenge focused on STEM and non-STEM careers, comparing the short-term cost of college and the long-term financial stability of both career paths. We were given 14 hours to complete a comprehensive paper offering a solution to their questions I and four others divided the work amongst ourselves. I was given responsibility for the first part of the problem, comparing the short term college tuitions between STEM and non-STEM fields. I would take a full 12 hours to complete this surprisingly sizable task.
My experience in the volunteer world has given me the direction to see many views on the world we live in today. I have gone on a week-long mission trip 4 summers in a row and 5 out of the last 6 and it has become
The most recent act of helping others is helping new Alpena High School student Lark Collins get to know her way around the school and become one of her very good friends. It
My favorite act of service that I have ever done was through the school’s project based learning. I had heard that the NWC Men’s Basketball Team was building a house a Haitian family who’s house had collapsed with all their belongings. I then contacted the men’s basketball coach asking if my group and I could raise money to buy items for their house. We organized a traditional bake sale, as well as an online bake sale, to raise money for the family. In the midst of baking 40 dozen cookies and 38 dozen cupcakes, I was coordinating with a missionary in Haiti, Krisie Mompremier, who knew what the family needed most.

The time I've spent tutoring this class, I've worked one-on-one with my fair share of students; but the student I've worked with the most is a freshman named Marcus. From the first time I met Marcus, he preferred to keep to himself and was having trouble with certain things; such as making corrections to grammar and spelling. Throughout the time I've gotten to know Marcus, he's become more confident in his abilities; as well as becoming friends with his classmates. He has made improvements in his reading aloud abilities by becoming louder, such as when we read “Lord of the Flies” or “The Help.” Marcus enjoys to make the class laugh, as well as talk to his classmates; especially when the topic is about cars.
It has taught me what really serving the community involves. This experience I have gained from such a voluntary service especially with such innocent and adorable children is as an eye opener as I am able to see some of the challenges faced by the society in this world. Listening to the stories of how most children live within the slum area is surely so touching imagining that many families experience such difficulties in real life. Volunteering has increases my reasoning as this has helped me to think about various challenging social problems in our community and how I can find solutions for them.
Describe any service that you’ve done in the past year. If you could help any charitable/service organization, which would it be and why? * Service is an important aspect in my life. Whether it is donating your time, talent, or treasure, I believe that giving back is an important attribute in growing as an individual. Throughout my time in highschool and up onto this very day I continue my philanthropic work with the Ronald McDonald House of Southern New Jersey.
