The birth of modernism and modern art can be traced back to the Industrial Revolution, a period that lasted from the 18th to the 19th century. Prior to the 19th century, artists were most often commissioned to make artwork by wealthy patrons, or institutions like the church. Much of this art depicted religious or mythological scenes that told stories and were intended to instruct the viewer. Many artist started to make art about people, places, or ideas that interested them. Pablo Picasso is know across the world as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. He, along with other artists like Henri Matisse and Marcel Duchamp, was one of the most influential artists in printmaking, sculpting, the mediums of painting, and ceramics of his time. The girl represents his mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter who he met when she was 17 years old. For eight years until 1935, he had a double life married to Olga Koklova while he was in secret with Marie. This young girl was painted multiple tomes during 1930’s by Picasso. This artwork was painted during Picasso’s cubism period, which was a style of a painting popular in Paris at the turn of the century, Picasso was one of the founding fathers of the style. All part of the painting are painted boldly it down into simple shapes, and then recreate those shapes on a canvas, presenting multiple perspectives at the same time. It was produced in the style Picasso was using at the time and evoked an image of Vanity such as had been utilized in art in earlier eras. It’s considered in terms of the erotic in Picasso’s art.
