The painting was created with the purpose of recording history, as it is not done in deep detail or extreme accuracy. The painting depicts the English arriving upon a shoreline spotted with aboriginals. The aboriginals appear to seem outnumber the English and portrayed with a sense of urgency - their positioning erratic. The body language of the aboriginal figures portray a sense of curiosity, they are not formal or entirely defensive but instead reaching out to the British with others clumped together watching cautiously. The British are painted in a more formal manner, wearing blue jackets and hats.
The four Mirabal sisters were Patria, Adela “Dede” Antonia, and Minerva. These women are now all seen as symbols of resistance to feminist roles in the Dominican Republic, in addition they are seen as huge advocators for the revolt against Trujillo. Minerva Mirabal was a prime model in the rebellion against dictator Rafael Trujillo’s rule in the Dominican Republic. This woman stood up against the president for her morals and self respect by denying his romances and gambling against him in order to be able to study law which had never been done in the country before. However, once Minerva denied Trujillo’s advances he incarcerated her father and once he was released he targeted her constantly.
The Sisters Brothers by Patrick Dewitt is set during the gold rush era. This novel is a tale of two brothers, Charlie and Eli, who work together as contract killers. Right from the beginning it is unmistaken that Eli does not share the same eagerness for killing as his brother Charlie. As the novel advances Eli’s sensitive side becomes more familiar. He starts to watch his weight, brush his teeth, and even starts to search for love.
In the background there are clouds in the sky at the right side of the painting, the sky is darker and scary and there was a war where they lived. The signs in the painting indicate the freedoms to be found, particularly from taxes, kings, and compulsory

In the reading from We Are Your Sisters: Black Women in the Nineteenth Century, Dorothy Sterling explores the many experiences of mainly African American women during the period of the Reconstruction era. Sterling states “whites put aside random acts of violence in favor of organized terror.” She focuses a lot on those experiences that involves the Ku Klux Klan (who were the organization responsible for these organized terror) and in a way, it seems fair because they were the main perpetrators of hate crimes against the African American community. The first few examples provided in the reading offer accounts of African American women whose husbands are often targets of the Ku Klux Klan because they were politicians or high-profile radicals in the South.
The Mirabal sisters were revolutionaries who opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. During the revolution, they were given the code name “Las Mariposas”, or “the butterflies”. The term “mariposa” suits each sister in a different way. Patria, Dedé, Minerva, and Mate Mirabal each have their one reason to be compared to a butterfly. The nickname “mariposa” shows who the Mirabal sisters are; they transformed from domestic, innocent mothers and wives into brave, defiant martyrs for national freedom.
There are many different animals seen throughout this painting those being one pig and what looks to be four birds. There is a naked tree on the left side of the painting that could suggest the season or living situations the people are living through. Throughout this painting, there are many different principles that use different elements to achieve to look of this painting. The first principle that is incorporated in this painting would pattern. The elements line and color are incorporated into an example that I can see in the painting that is the woman with the green dress.
Frida Kahlo created many glorious pieces. One of her most intriguing pieces is The Two Fridas. The image is quite symbolic and meaningful. Kahlo was a Mexican artist greatly known for her self portraits and the pain, passion and feminism of her paintings. The name of the piece I choose to analysis is Las dos Fridas, also known as The Two Fridas.
