Hansel and Gretel is about a brother and sister on who was left out in the woods and runs into a house that is supposed to take out of their hunger because its decorated full with candy. Its like an sign of hope, but instead inside they meet an old women who wants to get rid of them. She tell them all kinds of torture that she wants to do to them, and tries to trick them into the oven.
The book "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park explores the life of Salva, an 11-year-old boy living in South Sudan, after he is displaced by the Sudanese Civil War. First, in 1985, Salva and his classmates are instructed to run into the bush to escape the gunfire that was heard not far from the school. Then, he joins a group of travelers who are walking away from the war in Sudan, but they abandon him in a barn one evening while he is still asleep. After spending a few days with the barn's owner, Salva is sent away with a different group of travelers, must of whom accept him grudgingly. The group walks for a month toward Ethiopia, and eventually they arrive to the Itang refugee camp in Ethiopia.
Chains, a novel written by Laurie Halse Anderson follows a young enslaved girl named Isabel at the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. Isabel is sold to Elihu and Ann Lockton, along with her five year old sister Ruth, after her original owner dies. The girls are shipped to the house and Ann Lockton, who demands to be called Madam Lockton, is terrible to them. She beats the girls and constantly yells at them. After this, Madam Lockton sells Ruth, making Isabel mad.
Stephen Puleo wanted to tell the story of The Great Boston Molasses Flood of 1919, so he did. Puleo is an author, historian, university teacher, public speaker, and a communications professional. Some of his works are the “Boston Italians”, “A City So Grand”, and “Dark Tide”. While I was reading this book, I was amazed of how big and fast the Molasses was moving down the streets of Boston. You wouldn 't think of molasses moving fast.
In the realistic short story “ Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto, the main character named Victor, is desperate. Because he tries very hard to get a girlfriend, he finds many ways to be with his crush Teresa, and because he does embarrassing things to try and impress girls. The first reason Victor is desperate is because he tries hard to get a girlfriend. For instance, he promised himself “Teresa is going to be my girl this year”. In addition, Victor took Michael’s advice and used his (ridiculous) “strategy” on how to “get girls” by scowling at them.
Elijah Anderson, a Yale professor, developed the concept or theory entitled the “code of the street” which explains the reasoning for high rates of street violence among African-American juveniles in a Philadelphia community. The “code of the street” is the way of life for many living in poverty-stricken communities which attempt to regulate behaviors. Anderson observed that juveniles in inner-city neighborhoods who are exposed to racial discrimination, economic disadvantages and alienation from mainstream society may lead violent behavior. The strain, social learning, and labeling theories are all directly related to Anderson’s work.
Lucas Hahn Mr. Rodriguez Academic Lit. 15 June, 2023 The Cellar Analysis Throughout Lucas Hahn's short story The Cellar, the author explores the limits of human endurance both mentally and physically. The author portrays the mental limits of humans when we look at the character Ryan. Ryan at the beginning of the story was just a normal teenager, but at the end of the book he turned into a murderer.
Extended out to most children is the hand of a parent offering a warm hug along with warnings of danger to their children. This is what any fit parent would do. However this is not always the case with all parents. For example in the memoir The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Rose Mary and Rex Walls are not fit to be parents because they don’t give their children what they need and have an unstable relationship. Jeannette and her siblings live off of what their parents can afford when they have sufficient money but they don’t use it to give them what they need.
In the novel, Milkweed by Jerry Spinelli, Misha constantly stays in the “ghetto of the damned,” (Spinelli) for his family. Whether it be to feed the group of lucky orphans, to protect them from the punishment of smuggling, or to simply lift their spirits, Misha sacrifices his freedom for his family. Through Misha’s dialogue and actions, he proves that his family is his tether to the Warsaw Ghetto. Misha Pilsudski, the protagonist living through the Holocaust, and Janina Milgrom, his sister, discover a hole in the wall imprisoning the Warsaw Ghetto. This absence of brick represents freedom from the torturous ghetto, yet they only tastes this luxury.
In this report we will be talking about the novel Hatchet, written by Gary Paulsen. All throughout the novel, Paulsen uses creative literary techniques to emphasise the theme of man versus nature. The novel, Hatchet, is about a young boy, called Brian, who takes a plane over a forest going from America to Canada to visit his dad, when the pilot dies from a heart attack and Brian has to crash land the plane in a lake. Brian then has to learn how to live in the wild while waiting to be found by the rescue crews. In the paragraphs below we will be talking about the literary techniques Paulsen uses throughout the novel, like metaphors, similes, reptation and exaggeration, that help show that, Brian is dealing with dangerous animals of the wild,
Once upon a time, there were a set of twins born into a corrupt household. One of the twins was secretly jealous of the other, which resulted him taking his own brother’s life. This tragedy occurs in the novel, East of Eden, written by John Steinbeck. East of Eden is about several families being brought together and having love-hate relationships. The characters in the novel are separated into two different name groups, C and A.
Stephanie Herrick Ordinary Men Analysis HST 369 February 22, 2017 Many men avoided WWII by joining the Order Police. These ‘policemen’ were sent to Poland, or the Soviet side of Poland to maintain order. There were thousands of men who were not wanting to enlist into the military to be on the front lines, thus deciding to join the police. The policemen had two ‘decrees’ to keep up with, it was described in the book Ordinary Men written by Christopher Browning, the commissar order; which involved for on-the-spot execution of any communist suspect of being an anti-German.
Holes is written by louis Sachar and it is an adventure books. when a kid from a small town was accused of a crime he did not do and had a choice between camp and prison he chooses camp. So, he was sent to camp where you dig holes in the hot sun. Stanly's' grandfather was cursed by an old physic lady named Madame Zeroi with one leg for a lifetime and for all the males in his family so that included Stanly.
Holes I remember when I got in trouble for doing something I did not do. The title of this book is Holes, And the author is Louis Sachar. The theme of Holes is growing up because in the story stanly loses his innocence, he displays ambition, and he takes responsibility. One reason why I think innocence is part of the theme is because “ nobody had believed him when he said he was innocent, know when he said he stole them nobody believed him either” ( satchar pg 22).
There’s more to digging holes at Camp Green Lake than you might think in the book Holes, by Louis Sachar. “One thing was certain: They weren’t just digging to “build character.” They were definitely looking for something.” There are no plot holes left unfilled in Holes. With loads of humor, lovable characters, and a clever plot, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t read this book.
