Hansel and Gretel is about a brother and sister on who was left out in the woods and runs into a house that is supposed to take out of their hunger because its decorated full with candy. Its like an sign of hope, but instead inside they meet an old women who wants to get rid of them. She tell them all kinds of torture that she wants to do to them, and tries to trick them into the oven.
Chains, a novel written by Laurie Halse Anderson follows a young enslaved girl named Isabel at the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. Isabel is sold to Elihu and Ann Lockton, along with her five year old sister Ruth, after her original owner dies. The girls are shipped to the house and Ann Lockton, who demands to be called Madam Lockton, is terrible to them. She beats the girls and constantly yells at them. After this, Madam Lockton sells Ruth, making Isabel mad.
Economics and Psychology in Appalachia, An Analysis of the Novel: Above the Waterfall In the novel Above the Waterfall, Ron Rash decides to focus on the main theme of Loss. The culture within the beautiful ecosystem of Appalachia is encased with family ties that are hard to deny. Rash writes, “In a county this rural, everyone’s connected, if not by blood, then in some other way” from the relationship between Darby and Gerald to the friendship between Les and Becky, their relationships show a true loyalty to the ones they have grown up with and show that Appalachia is a tight knit community (Rash 90). The characters within the novel: Above the Waterfall demonstrate signs of loss of self, domestic violence, as well as poverty.

The book I read was People of the Sparks by Jeanne DuPrau. The book is about all the people of Ember getting to this village that got out of a depression a few years ago and they are finally back up on their feet. Some of the people of Sparks don't like that the council people let the Emberties just settle in their village. The book is mostly about how the Emberties struggle to adapt and how they come to peace with the people of Spark. The narrator is someone from outside the story, so the point of view is third person.
In the realistic short story “ Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto, the main character named Victor, is desperate. Because he tries very hard to get a girlfriend, he finds many ways to be with his crush Teresa, and because he does embarrassing things to try and impress girls. The first reason Victor is desperate is because he tries hard to get a girlfriend. For instance, he promised himself “Teresa is going to be my girl this year”. In addition, Victor took Michael’s advice and used his (ridiculous) “strategy” on how to “get girls” by scowling at them.
Elijah Anderson, a Yale professor, developed the concept or theory entitled the “code of the street” which explains the reasoning for high rates of street violence among African-American juveniles in a Philadelphia community. The “code of the street” is the way of life for many living in poverty-stricken communities which attempt to regulate behaviors. Anderson observed that juveniles in inner-city neighborhoods who are exposed to racial discrimination, economic disadvantages and alienation from mainstream society may lead violent behavior. The strain, social learning, and labeling theories are all directly related to Anderson’s work.
It is a strange thing to think that a rich and greedy woman could have large similarities to a poor slave girl, taken away from her family at such a young age. Yet, this theory is not completely far-fetched. The story “Chains” by Laurie Halse Anderson opens up revealing Isabel’s character to the audience, and allows a first impression. She’s a curious and kind-hearted girl who has a younger sister, and her master had just previously died. She was promised freedom in her master’s will, but was sold at a tavern by her master’s nephew.
Extended out to most children is the hand of a parent offering a warm hug along with warnings of danger to their children. This is what any fit parent would do. However this is not always the case with all parents. For example in the memoir The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Rose Mary and Rex Walls are not fit to be parents because they don’t give their children what they need and have an unstable relationship. Jeannette and her siblings live off of what their parents can afford when they have sufficient money but they don’t use it to give them what they need.
I. There has always been a negative perception regarding the city of Washington D.C. It is truly one city that is universally hated for one principal reason. It is the center of American politics. Mark Leibovich truly illuminates this in his book, This Town. His take on Washington showcases how the democratic institutions that have been put in place by our founding fathers during the beginning of our nation are the key components that politicians from both sides of the aisle use to create political gridlock.
In the novel, Milkweed by Jerry Spinelli, Misha constantly stays in the “ghetto of the damned,” (Spinelli) for his family. Whether it be to feed the group of lucky orphans, to protect them from the punishment of smuggling, or to simply lift their spirits, Misha sacrifices his freedom for his family. Through Misha’s dialogue and actions, he proves that his family is his tether to the Warsaw Ghetto. Misha Pilsudski, the protagonist living through the Holocaust, and Janina Milgrom, his sister, discover a hole in the wall imprisoning the Warsaw Ghetto. This absence of brick represents freedom from the torturous ghetto, yet they only tastes this luxury.
Brief Summary Staples speaks of his experiences being a six foot tall, young, African American male in a city filled with poverty and crime. He had never truly been exposed to the stereotypes and discrimination in his younger days, of course he knew of it, but he never truly experienced it. When he was twenty-two years old, he was out walking at night due to a bad case of insomnia. Apparently, he was following a little too uncomfortably close to a white woman and she felt endangered. She began to run from him in a defense mechanism, opening his eyes to the discrimination he was born into.
Morgan Newton Debbie Kincaid English 12 8 February 2023 Into The Wilderness Into The Wild written by Jon Krakuer in 1997, sheds light on the true story of a twenty four year old man. Christopher McCandless’ 113 day odyssey, which was cut short by a fatal mistake. McCandless’ journey took place in 1992, and his body was discovered after spending approximately four months in the bush. Christopher Mccandless’ journey or even life was full of chance and bad luck, but unfortunately during his odyssey his bad luck outweighed his luck.
The film “Solitary Nation” by Dan Edge had an impact on me as I was watching the film of the inmates’ lives in solitary while a new warden is trying to make a change for them. Although it was similar to other prison documentaries, it had more of a closer view to solitary than the normal prisons. It provided evidence of how torturing it could be after a certain time, and how the world is constantly full of that nature no matter what measures are taken. It depicted the causes of solitary on the inmates’ behavior, and how contradictory it is to have solitary confinement. Should solitary still be used as a way of punishment?
Stephanie Herrick Ordinary Men Analysis HST 369 February 22, 2017 Many men avoided WWII by joining the Order Police. These ‘policemen’ were sent to Poland, or the Soviet side of Poland to maintain order. There were thousands of men who were not wanting to enlist into the military to be on the front lines, thus deciding to join the police. The policemen had two ‘decrees’ to keep up with, it was described in the book Ordinary Men written by Christopher Browning, the commissar order; which involved for on-the-spot execution of any communist suspect of being an anti-German.
