My definition of parental involvement.

Hundreds of articles, books, studies explore the subject of parent involvement, its effect on children's academic success and a different perspective for teachers, administrators, and parents. Schools encourage all parents to be engaged, involved suggestions listed on their website for our choosing. Those tips may satisfy the engaged parent definition according to the school district's philosophy, but it's just one aspect of this complex affair. My definition, as a parent myself, of an involved parent differs from the schools typical parental engagement frames. I don't volunteer in the classroom although most schools recommend this option that has no impact on students academic achievements.

There are PTO's with a much broader scope, that taken the initiative to empower parents with information, resources concerning education policies, developing educational materials, and answering questions tailored to individual family necessity. A PTO I would love in our school. Regardless the involvement parents choose as part of their children's education, we cannot succeed alone. Often the emphasis falls on parents commitment in their children's educational progress, but, an effective parental engagement happens with the guide of teachers and administrators.
