I have chosen to compare and contrast two buildings: the Parthenon and the Lincoln Memorial. The Lincoln Memorial built by the architect Henry Bacon in 1914 was influenced by Greeks. Around this time there was a lot of building being built in reference to the classic times becoming neoclassic period. The Lincoln Memorial was built in the nation’s capital, Washington D.C., symbolizing the man who fought courageously for democracy. The Parthenon was built around 447-432 B.C. in Athenian Acropolis in dedication to Athena, the goddess of victory.
I choose to compare and contrast the Greek Parthenon to the Roman Pantheon. First I would like to go into a little history of the who buildings. Starting with the Parthenon, built between 447 and 432 BCE dedicated to the deity Athena. “The acropolis itself measures some 300 by 150 metres and is 70 metres high at its maximum. The temple, which would sit on the highest part of the acropolis, was designed by the architects Iktinos and Kallikratis, and the project was overseen by the sculptor Pheidias.

If you have never had the opportunity to see the Parthenon in Greece and the Pantheon in Italy, it’s possible that the similarity of the names would lead you to believe that they are the same or, at least, almost identical. While it is true that certain elements of the buildings mirror each other, there are major differences in their structures and functions. The architecture of each reflects the cultural ideals of the times. After the Greeks overcame the Persian invasion, Athens became the head of all of the Greek city-states. During this period, the country enjoyed peace and great prosperity.
The cultural values of Athens relate to architecture and their religion, while Sparta exemplified warrior values in their cultural values, but both societies shared cultural background rooted in myths and legends. The Athenian Parthenon was built by architects Iktinos and Kallikrates under the supervision of Pericles. It was a large and expensive project dedicated to the Greek god “Athena.” The Parthenon was also built on a hill or the Acropolis of Athens, highest point of Athens (Doc #2).The money used to build this Parthenon was originally meant to make Athens’ navy stronger and bigger, but Pericles used this fortune to build the Parthenon showing the power and wealth of Athens.
Two very important historic buildings from the Greek and Roman civilizations, namely the Parthenon and the Pantheon respectively, are worthy of academic exploration. An analysis of their function and style will help to put their design and features into perspective, and create a better appreciation for their emulation in Western civilization. These buildings possess very unique individual characteristic designs, which bears testimony to the societies from which they originate. However, they are also a resourceful database of knowledge in terms of their symbolism, rich heritage of their era and application to the present civilization.
Ancient architecture preserves history Two historical monuments with extraordinary architectural stories are rare to find still standing to this day. The Parthenon and the Great Pyramids of Giza are perhaps two of the most magnificent pieces of architecture the world has ever seen. In order to creates a better understanding of the importance of the two ancient structures the differences and similarities of the Parthenon and the pyramids constructions, functions along with relevance both then and now must be explored. The Parthenon and The Great Pyramids of Giza both share some similarities about the creation process behind them as well as some differences.
Introduction: The Two Buildings; Parthenon in Athens and Pantheon in Rome are both classical heritage of the former world powers. Both buildings were temple built and dedicated to the gods of Athens and Romans. The excellent strength and the durability of these temples are unimaginable. Going by the length of time that these buildings have been in existence, one cannot but admires the brilliance of the ancient Greek and Roman architects for such excellent edifices that have outlived many generations, and yet remain a symbol of ancient Greek and Roman history.
This essay will be focused on the cultural use, differences and similarities of Greek and Roman architecture with special focus on Parthenon in Athens and the Pantheon in Rome Italy. Both buildings have various similarities; I will focus on how each country adapts to their differences. It is important to note that five (5) architectural orders were highly favored in the Greek and Roman architectural pattern. The Parthenon and Pantheon are both ancient temples, while the Parthenon was built in Ancient Greece for the goddess of Athena as a gratitude to heaven for the defeat of Persia; the pantheon was built in Rome to celebrate the Roman gods. Through this essay I will be discussing the comparisons and the contrast between temples in Greek architecture and roman architecture. I will be commenting on the forms, materials, technology and the siting to compare and contrast the architecture of ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. Also I will discuss how these points reflect the structure of the Greek and roman societies from which the temples emerged. Greek Architecture There were three main styles in Greek architecture, these styles were called the Doric style, Ionic style and the Corinthian style.

As a start, the building types are many as the private houses, baths, as well as temples and theatres and these are our points; Firstly in temples, Greeks’ structures were invented to be the home of gods called Parthenon having an obsolete religion. As inside these sanctuaries they didn’t have spots of meeting, but obeying the penances and aimed to custom an individual god in them. The Roman and Greek civilizations have many elements in common , both of them have flourished in the field of architecture , art philosophy and science , because both of them occurred very close to each other so they were influenced by each other , to be more specific the Greeks have been influenced by other cultures , and have influenced the Romans , so they have many similarities and differences in these fields . Both Greek and romans flourished in Architecture and art , starting by architecture , the columns in both civilizations were one of three styles or what we call orders , Doric , ionic , and Corinthean . The style of the building and the purpose it is built give a brief and thoughtful storybook about the culture of the architect as art, generally, and architecture, particularly, is a language itself. Thus, buildings narrate the stories of the people among the history and tell their traditions and habits to the next generation through its design, inscriptions, and details. In this essay, I will discuss how both the style and function of the Greek Parthenon and the Roman Pantheon served as typical examples of their cultures in Athens and ancient Rome. In addition to the similarities and differences between these two cultures through the two buildings. Both the Greek and the Roman architecture inspired the cultures and architects until these days due to the diverse meaning they carry and symbolize in astonishing ways through the different orders, columns, roofs, friezes, and domes.
The bath houses used arches, domes and vaults to make them both aesthetically beautiful and to work as functional spaces. The Romans also made spectacular private homes for those who could afford them, and designed and built innovative apartment type buildings for those who couldn’t afford a private residence. As with the Greeks, the Temples of Rome were a great architectural achievement. These temples are a significant source of their architectural history and still today are some of the most visible remains from their culture. Unlike the Greeks who believed in having an equal emphasis in their design on all sides of their temples, the Romans put the emphasis on the front of their buildings.
