Conquering the Types of Terrorism Terrorism is defined as the use of violence or intimidation to draw attention to a certain cause. When most people think of terrorism, they might think of the attack on 9/11. For Americans, especially, the attack will never be forgotten and will always come up when talking about terrorism, but there is more to terrorism than this one attack. It has been going on all throughout history. Some scholars believe that the first act of terrorism was committed by a group of Zealots of Judea in the first century AD. These Zealots planned assassinations of Roman officials because they did not believe they could stay faithful to their religion while living under the Romans. People that use this type of terrorism usually act alone instead of being in a group. Most of the time, pathological terrorists do not have a true motive so they are not really seen as your common terrorist. In the United States, pathological terrorism is most common due to school shootings. It seems like school shootings have become an almost everyday occurrence. The Columbine High School shooting is the most famous example of pathological terrorism in the United States. The shooters involved in the Columbine shooting used violence for the thrill of causing fear in the students that went there. Whether it be state, religious, pathological, issue oriented, or narco-terrorism, every type is dangerous. Everyday, terrorism is being fought, and methods have been formed to fight terrorism. The first thing that should be done when fighting terrorism is to find out how the terrorists act and their attack pattern. Once the attack pattern is figured out, it is easier to defend an attack. Perhaps the best way to fight to terrorism is to get people involved. It is the everyday citizen’s job to notice terrorism and notify the authorities when it is being committed (“Prevention”). There are some strategies that only work for certain types of terrorism. When fighting religious terrorism, it is useful to talk to a religious leader and form a bond. A bond will help stop violence and instead bring about compromise. Treating a religious group as enemies will only cause them to retaliate. Building bonds will work worth religious terrorism, but it would not work with narco-terrorism. A strategy for narco-terrorism would be to strengthen police and security. Drug related terrorism usually deals with gangs. Strengthening the police on an area with drug activity will weaken the activity of buying and selling of drugs causing narco-terrorism to decline.
