Pearl Harbor
Due to the tension between Japan and the United States, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941. Trade restricting and the economy led to their troubled relationship. The aftermath resulted in the U.S. entering World War II and the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Japan attacked The United States because they wanted to be a world power. Japan never had the supplies that they needed because it was an island country so they relied on China and America for resources. However, Japan got into an argument with China and China would not trade with Japan anymore. Sunday was “America’s Lazy Day” according to the Japanese so they decided to attack when America was “on the couch.” At 7:55 the first wave of bombs dropped, “Tora Tora Tora” shouted Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto with great pleasure. Tora means tiger in Japanese and tora tora tora means lightning attack. By saying this Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto notified the fleet of bombers that America was caught completely by surprise. The second wave hit at 8:55.
After 9:45 the bombs stopped dropping. Pearl Harbor had been bombed for One hour and 50 minutes. Pearl Harbor was an area that held Navy ships such as: USS Arizona, USS Oklahoma, USS Utah, USS California, USS West Virginia, USS Maryland, USS Pennsylvania, USS Tennessee, and USS Nevada.
When the Japanese started bombing, they aimed for the Navy battleships hoping to set off a chain reaction. The USS Arizona was the first to go exploding in a fiery cloud of metal and fire. The USS Arizona did not start the chain reaction of explosions the Japanese were hoping for needed to destroy other ships. The other ship that was destroyed was USS Oklahoma. USS Oklahoma also exploded into a ball of fire reaching into the sky. The last ship to be destroyed in this violent assault was the USS Utah. This was the only damaged ship ship that did not explode. The bombs only caused a hole in the ship resulting in its demise. The USS California, USS West Virginia USS Maryland, USS Pennsylvania, USS Tennessee, and USS Nevada.
