After few hours reading, “The Sanctuary of School” was written by Lynda Barry, grew up in an interracial neighborhood in Seattle, Washington State. Then, I think this article was interesting to read. I love the way how she told us her past experience by using her own voice to lead us step by step get into her story, then she also shares us about her feeling and how it impacted to her future life. Plus, at the end, she argues that the government should not be cutting the school programs and art related activities. Those programs definitely do help the students and the parents as well.
Even though TV is quite violent today. We cannot blame youth violence on the media. One’s neighborhood is one of the most significant environments that influences kids. This is because kids learn how to live in this world by who and what is around them. If there is a lot of violence in the area.
In the realistic short story “ Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto, the main character named Victor, is desperate. Because he tries very hard to get a girlfriend, he finds many ways to be with his crush Teresa, and because he does embarrassing things to try and impress girls. The first reason Victor is desperate is because he tries hard to get a girlfriend. For instance, he promised himself “Teresa is going to be my girl this year”. In addition, Victor took Michael’s advice and used his (ridiculous) “strategy” on how to “get girls” by scowling at them.

This a book about a boy called David which is the author who was brutally beaten and starved by his mentally ill, and alcoholic mother. In a person’s childhood, most of their major decisions that they are faced with in life are made by their parents or guardians. Parents make the decisions for them because they want the best for their children, and want them to have a good chance to survive in the real world when they reach adulthood. After childhood however, they must make decisions for themselves, which will eventually lead them towards their dreams or the life their parents were afraid of. In the book The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore, the decisions that were made for the author Wes Moore, led him away from living the life of a criminal, to living the life of a very successful man. In his life, Wes’s mom (Joy) made most of the important decisions that led him to success.
The article “Teens Against Hitler” by Lauren Tarshis shows the challenges of a Jewish family during World War 2 and how a young teenager rebelled against the Nazis and Hitler. In 1939 in the city of Warsaw Ben and his Jewish family were rounded up and forced into Warsaw’s ghetto. Later, Ben joined a partisan group and fought the Nazis and Hitler. This was a great act of courage but came at the price of his family’s life.
The incidence of child abuse and neglect has increased dramatically in the past 25 years; the statistics have risen over 130% since 1980 with 1993 being the first year since 1972 in which the number was less than the previous year. Throughout the years child abuse has had a greater impact on the United States and more thorough research has been brought out. Contemporary outlooks on child abuse can be traced to the early 1960s, when developments in radiological equipment made it easier for physicians to detect any sorts of maltreatment. But oftentimes parents who mistreat their kids do not go to physicians, rather they just cover up signs of abuse in the comfort of their home. That was the case of Dennis Jurgens, a three year old boy who was abused and murdered by his adopted parents in White Bear Lake Minnesota in 1965. Since the discovery of this case, the course of adoption process, child safety and security, and people’s attitude towards child abuse has changed to some degree. Interfering in other people’s family affair was seen as rude and inappropriate.
In Harlan Coben’s article “The Undercover Parent” (2008), the author claims that parents should protect their children by getting spyware on their devices to protect them from the dangers of the Internet. Coben supports his claim by first providing an illustration of what most people think when they hear the word “spyware” and then giving an example of why you should get spyware to protect your child. The author’s purpose is to persuade parents of teenagers so that they get spyware to protect their children because he first thought it was bad, but then he saw the good of it. Coben writes in an informational and conversational tone for parents to understand him in order to protect their children against the dangers of the internet.
(James, 2008) Children who are sexually abused are generally abused by someone that they know. Men are not the only ones that sexually abuse children. Women who have been abused themselves tend to
When it means to be free, it means you have the power to make decisions that influence good, to not have an opposing force telling you that you can’t make that decision. The ability to make your own decisions, to learn and grow from them is a power no one should take from a person. In Harrison Bergeron it shows that the government doesn’t allow you to make a choice for yourself, they downgrade citizens to the point where they don't have the ability to make their own choices, they control their citizens by using handicaps, and different items to conceal the attractiveness of different people, for everyone to feel equal. “They were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else.
Some of these children may not be old enough to have a voice or they just are too shy. By having those in society aware of the signs and symptoms of child abuse we are hoping to break down the cycle. Some parents may not even believe that what they are doing to their child is a sign of child abuse but it could be something that has been passed down from their parents. What parents have to remember is that there are many ways of parenting around the world, this does not mean that anything goes, as long as it’s “cultural”, parents must adapt to what is acceptable in the dominant culture around them (Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance website, 2016, para.
