The Education of Dasmine Cathey “The Education of Dasmine Cathey,” by Brad Wolverton is an informative and compelling story about a student athlete who struggles with making educated choices that he is not familiar with in life, college, and football. There are so many reasons young college athletes succeed in sports, but fail in education. This story is a tragic tale of educational shortfalls that caused Mr. Cathey a football player to fall through the cracks of a flawed school system and became exploited by his family, friends and the college football program. Setting is important to any story, and having a setting that creates a story helps give the reader a better feeling about what they are reading. Writers use setting all the time in a story to make a great story an amazing story. In Barry Callaghan’s “Our Thirteenth Summer” Barry uses setting to give the reader the reaction he intended to. In an introduction before the story titled “About the Story” the author states that “it's during the Second World War” (Callaghan 123). In addition Bobby also declares that they are not Jewish by saying “We're not Jewish” (124) after the narrator asks and argues that they are.
While talking about the end of the Greek democracy, we have to talk about the Pericles, Thucydides, and "The Peloponnesian Wars". Ordinarily, Pericles was the famous Democratic leader of the Athens. He was also well known for this great speech. Regardless of being the famous leader, talented politicians like Pericles and Themistocles mostly dominated the Athenian politics in order to get supported on their own agenda and policies by the majority in the assembly.
He reminded them that he had a dictatorship manner of coaching. He often used metaphors such as “Any two year old child can throw a fit, but football is about controlling that anger” Coach Boone drilled perfection to his team members. They were paired up and forced to discuss family and social issues about each other to promote the knowledge of cultural differences, and most of all, to develop friendships. Coach Boone gave minimal water breaks to enhance discipline. He went to the extreme of awakening the team as early as 3:00am for a morning run through a dark, damp forest.
Tim LaRocca Persepolis KPA In the book “Persepolis”, the author Marjane Satrapi, uses excellent diction to help the reader obtain knowledge and gain understanding of her main purpose in a specific passage or chapter of the book. Despite her specific word choice, it is challenging for readers to truly understand her main purpose only through literary terms and devices used throughout the book. Therefore, to help increase the readers ability to understand the main purpose of a certain specific passage, Satrapi uses an extensive amount of precise graphic elements. For example, in the passage “Kim Wilde”, Satrapi is able to express her main purpose that when governments tend to restrict the people too much, and become oppressive, the people tend to resist their law and rebel against the law by using the graphic elements of shading and facial expressions to express her purposes in and easier and clearer visual way.
I personally believe that incoming English 1 ninth grade classes should read the Odyssey for many reasons. If students who pay close attention to how Odysseus changed throughout the story will soon find that they may have changed themselves! However I do think that all incoming English 1 students should read the Odyssey in a different style- with more emphasis on the Graphic Novel, and even the low-quality movie, as opposed to the actual novel (also known as Fitzgerald). In my opinion, learning with visuals is more efficient and informative, and allows the students to retain information better than just simply reading words off of a page. Also, a lot of the images found in the graphic novel can be not only entertaining and cool to look at,
Seventy years after the Holocaust, it’s hard to completely comprehend what it felt like for the people that lived through it, and how truly terrible it must have been. The book Maus provides the slightest glimpse at life back then for the Jews. The scene of Richieu’s death is the most noteworthy because it gives us a greater understanding of the people’s mindset during the Holocaust, and and shows a different side of it. For Tosha, and presumably many other Jews, the concentration camps that didn’t kill you were a fate worse than death, and the ones that did kill you immediately were the worst possible places to die. Just the possibility of being sent to one, not knowing whether or not she would be killed there, drove Tosha to kill not only
My experience in English 1010 was great. My writing skills were very poor at the beginning of the semester. I did not know how to write correct sentence structure. I had great difficulties making my sentences flow smoothly and clearly. I was not able to edit a paragraph for mistakes in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Jasper Jones Essay Jasper Jones, the iconic Australian novel, explores the main theme of morality and ethics, through a range of language techniques and conventions. As the story progresses, Silvey portrays Charlie’s constantly challenged notions of right and wrong, with the use of language techniques. The story is mainly written using first-person narrative perspective through the eyes of Charlie. Silvey exploits language conventions such as capitalization, spacing, dialogue, descriptive language, and imagery to create Charlie’s point of view and construct his thoughts on morality and ethics. Morality and ethics is a constant theme in the novel and is explored through a range of different language conventions and techniques.
For most of the oration Pericles praised the city of Athens. There were multiple characteristics that he highlighted during his speech. First, Pericles talked about Athens’ system of democracy saying that “our system of government does not copy the institutions of our neighbors”. Even though other Greeks live their lives differently the Athenians do not consider them less than. They are free and tolerant in their private lives, but obey are law abiding citizens in public life.
Crossroads: A Sad Vaudeville by Carlos Solórzano and When Greek Meets Greek by Samuel Selvon have very similar characters. A woman named Woman, who is the antagonist, in Crossroads: A Sad Vaudeville pretends to be a young, beautiful woman to impress a young handsome man. In the story When Greek Meets Greek a man named Ram, who is the protagonist, pretends to be an Indian to live in a building. Similarly, both of the characters manipulate someone to hide their true selves, in the end fail, and have an ironic twist. Woman uses manipulation to trick the young man.

Birth and Death Pericles was born in Halorgos, Greece around 495BC and he died around 429BC in Athens. Pericles was one of the most influential Greek orator, statesman and general of Athens during the Golden Age – in between the Persian and Peloponnesian wars.
Bissinger emphasizes this point to persuade the readers to understand how detrimental pouring large amounts of money and energy towards the high school football team severely impact the future of all the students in Permian High. The small pond these children are living in disrupts their academic success, and the adults fail to recognize this notion. A teacher of thirty-one years, Jane Franks explains that they are now “deadened to themselves and to the world around them” because of their constant lack of effort in class (133). Bissinger includes her views on the effects of the obsession with football, and how the football players are encouraged to only focus on the sport. Franks describes them as ‘deadened’ to the outside world, further examining how unprepared these young adults are for the real world.
