I learned the most from staying after school with a Catholic Charities of Charlotte program on a daily basis just to get more practice with English, do my homework, and make new friends who came from another country like me. Watching cartoons and the High School Musical movie over and over again was also helpful. Cartoons were easy to understand, and by listening to them, I began to understand the English words that were used. With High School Musical, I watched the movie with subtitles, and I came to know the story very well that way. Soon I began to turn off the subtitles until I could watch the entire movie in English. From a simple start, I have continued to get better at understanding, speaking, and writing in English. I wished my English would get better, even if it improved slowly. There were times that I felt like I would never learn English well enough to know what other people were saying to me. This struggle taught me how to deal with tough situations and, more importantly, that life is not always easy. I had to believe in myself that I could do it, and I constantly reminded myself that I did not have a choice, but that learning English was a priority in my new
